Chris Sutton can barely believe ‘astonishing’ Vitor Pereira vs Gary O’Neil statistic at Wolves

Wolves can now start to think about next season, after going 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

Wanderers recorded a huge 2-1 win over Ipswich Town last weekend, and with just seven games left to play, it is practically certain the club will now stay in the Premier League.

The appointment of Vitor Pereira has proven to be a masterstroke by the club.

Eyebrows were raised when it was first reported the clubs were in talks with him after the sacking of Gary O’Neil.

But Pereira has come in and had a major impact. Not only has he got points on the board, but he’s also dealt with disciplinary issues, and gained the respect of the dressing room.

He’s also struck up a very good relationship with the fans. Wolves supporters recently hailed Pereira for his passion.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer are in agreement that Pereira has done a super job at Wolves since he came in in December.

And someone else who’s been very impressed is Chris Sutton, who has been especially stunned by one statistic that compares Pereira and his predecessor Gary O’Neil.

One of the most important things Pereira had to do when he first came in was to shore Wolves up at the back.

Wanderers were just all at sea before he arrived, and were especially poor defending set-pieces.

The signing of Emmanuel Agbadou was a game-changer for Wolves, and the improvements at the back have been absolutely crucial in Wolves’ revival.

The defensive improvement in the team was lauded by pundit Chris Sutton, who said on the Monday Night Club: “Since he’s taken over, his record… it’s pretty phenomenal.

“He’s only lost to teams in the top half. The alarming stat was under Gary O’Neil they conceded 40 goals in 16 games.

“And in 15 games under Pereira, just 19. I mean that… the contrast of that is astonishing. What he’s done is made them more pragmatic, they have a better balance.”

Wolves improving defensively was paramount

It was the single biggest thing Pereira needed to do to keep Wolves.

Wolves were embarrassing at times under O’Neil at the back.

But Pereira has sorted it out, and the back three of Matt Doherty, Agbadou and Toti Gomes deserve great credit.

Agbadou has come in for all kind of plaudits for the impact he’s made. But the two players either side of him Doherty and Toti have really stepped up.

For Pereira to put his faith in Doherty for that role on the right of the three was something not many saw coming, and it was largely worked out.

And then Wolves always had quality at the top end of the pitch with Matheus Cunha, Jorgen Strand Larsen and others.

In recent weeks, their efforts have not been going to waste unlike in the first half of the campaign.
