Carlos Forbs explains perfectly what is wrong with Wolves and Fer Lopez right now

Carlos Forbs’ loan spell at Molineux was disappointing for all involved.

Forbs spent the 2024/25 season at Molineux, but started just one league match all season.

A product of Man City, the Portuguese came to Wolves from Ajax with high expectations, but he barely made an impact for either of Gary O’Neil and Vitor Pereira.

Forbs played 239 minutes over the course of the season.

But he has found form at Club Brugge, already on four goals and five assists in 17 appearances this season — including a brilliant Forbs performance against Barcelona in the Champions League.

He spoke on his time at Wolves in a recent interview.

Carlos Forbs says he was lacking confidence at Wolves

Forbs has to be considered a Wolves flop, but seeing what he is doing now in Belgium points to the blame lying elsewhere.

He provides a possible explanation to Het Belang van Limburg (via Sport Witness), saying: “The staff, the board, everyone here believes in me.

“At Ajax and Wolverhampton, I couldn’t do my thing as well. I knew I’d end up on the bench after one or two bad matches. Not here. That affects your confidence.”

Forbs wasn’t given much of a chance by either of last season’s managers, and he puts the failed move down to that.

Ironically, Wolves are in need of a pacey, direct wide player. That’s what the 21-year-old has become in Brugge. He just needed time.

And a similar situation is unfolding at Molineux this season.

Wolves repeating Forbs mistake with Fer Lopez

Another 21-year-old, Fer Lopez, looks to be following the same trajectory.

Lopez is already being linked with a Wolves exit just months after making the move from Celta Vigo. He too has made just one start and 120 minutes overall.

For £20 odd million, you’d be hoping for a player who can get regular minutes at the bare minimum — Lopez can’t get a look in this season.

Fer Lopez was buzzing to sign for Wolves

“It was very hard to leave my boyhood club, but I was very pleased to come here.”

Now, Rob Edwards’ track record as a youth coach does provide encouragement that a player who is obviously very talented can come good. But will Wolves keep him long enough for it to click.

They didn’t with Forbs, and he’s now bossing it in the Champions League.
