Bruno Lage was ‘so happy’ to sign £27.5m player, now Wolves fans want him sold this summer

Bruno Lage enjoyed mixed success in the transfer market during his time as Wolves boss, with one of his statement signings ultimately failing to provide the goods at Molineux.

Lage claimed he learnt a lot at Wolves, and one regret he may have, looking back, is his dealings in the transfer market.

Whilst there were impressive signings like Rayan Ait-Nouri and Jose Sa, there were also some awful transfers mixed in there.

Francisco Trincao flopped with a whimper, but the crown of worst Wolves signing simply has to go to Goncalo Guedes – someone who Lage was desperate to sign at the time.

Bruno Lage was desperate to sign Goncalo Guedes

Lage sanctioned the £27.5 million signing of Guedes (BBC Sport) during his second summer in charge, with the forward arriving from La Liga side Valencia.

Having previously worked together in the Benfica youth setup, the then Wolves boss was seemingly over the moon to secure Guedes’ signature at the time.

“I worked with him when he was younger. I was U17 manager, he was 16, and I pushed him to work with me. After eight years at Benfica academy, I left, but followed his career from Benfica to PSG and the move to Valencia,” via BBC Radio West Midlands.

“I’m so happy to have him here because he was one of the first names I said to come and now we create that chance. I am so happy for that because I think he can give us solutions to play as a winger and as a striker.”

Wolves want to see Guedes exit

Sadly for Guedes, though, his time playing under Lage would be short-lived, with the Portuguese manager receiving the sack only two months after the attacker’s arrival.

Two loans and three years later, Wolves fans want rid of Guedes this summer after yet another dismal campaign at Molineux.

Guedes’ time at Wolves looks done but with two years left on his deal, the club may face a tough task of securing a sale this summer.

The 28-year-old is one of Wolves’ highest-paid players, so he may be tempted to stick around and soak up the money – something Fosun will no doubt be looking to avoid.
