Bruno Lage praises Toti Gomes again as defender impresses against Norwich

Bruno Lage has spoken of how pleased he is with Toti Gomes, after the defender impressed against Norwich City on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was back in the starting XI for the first time since early February against the Canaries.

He came in for Romain Saiss on the left of a back three.

Wolves were shaky at the back in the first-half especially, but Gomes himself was actually fairly solid and composed.

He was much better than his defensive colleagues Willy Boly and Conor Coady.

Given the way Gomes played, it is something of a surprise that the star hasn’t had any chances at all over the past few months.

But Lage spoke very positively after the Norwich draw, and his comments surely point to more involvement for the player next season.

He said (Express & Star): “That’s the kind of player we are happy to have in our squad. He works hard every day and wants to improve and learn. Every time he comes and plays he has a good performance.

“I’m happy with him because he deserves that.”

Lage has always championed players having a strong work ethic.

It clearly means a lot to him that his players give it their all. One thinks back to the comments he made after the defeat to Crystal Palace when he called out Ki-Jana Hoever and other young players in the squad.

It sounds very much as though Gomes is an impressive character, as well as being a very promising defender.

Toti Gomes surely in line for greater involvement with Wolves first-team next season, as Lage praises defender after Norwich showing

These comments from Lage are quite significant.

He is suggesting that Gomes’ conduct and work ethic are exactly what he expects from other players within his squad.

That will stand him in very good stead.

Lage did recently hint that Gomes could form part of a rebuild at Wolves.

And these latest comments further suggest that we will be seeing much more of him in 2022/23. Especially since it looks as though Saiss is leaving.
