Bruno Lage hails professional Wolves midfielder Leander Dendoncker

Wolves manager Bruno Lage has hailed Leander Dendoncker, branding the Belgian ‘one of the best professionals we have’.

Lage moved to give a positive mention to the star when talking about Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho.

Dendoncker has enjoyed a decent season in 2021/22.

He initially found opportunities hard to come by.

Lage much preferred to use Neves and Moutinho as a midfield pairing in the early stages of the season.

But as the season as worn on, Dendoncker has seen more game time.

He’s been quite an important player in 2022, and he is currently back in the picture with Neves having been on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Dendoncker can sometimes come in for harsh criticism.

Neves and Moutinho are firm favourites which can sometimes lead to Dendoncker being overlooked or underappreciated.

But Lage certainly rates the 27-year-old very highly.

He said (via Birmingham Mail): “It would be hard. If we miss one, it’s hard, if we miss two, it’s hard. They have been playing for the last three years and they know the role – Ruben is the first midfielder, Joao is the second midfielder. When I play with three, Leander (Dendoncker) also does the job.

“It’s hard to find a player like Ruben, it’s hard to find a player like Joao, and to find two who know each other like they do. I am very happy, also with Leander. I like to mention Leander when I talk about the midfielders because Leander is a fantastic guy and player, every time I need him he is ready. He is one of the best professionals that we have.”

Lage clearly values professional Dendoncker, and manager’s words could see him extend contract at Wolves

It must be nice for Dendoncker to hear Lage speaking about him in such a way.

He may be below Neves and Moutinho in the pecking order. But he has still had lots of opportunities, from a manager who obviously really values his qualities.

Dendoncker’s contract at Wolves expires in the summer of 2023.

One wonders if there will soon be conversations about him potentially extending.

According to recent reports there has been some interest from Lazio.

Perhaps Lage’s remarks could encourage the former Anderlecht man to agree fresh terms, and there would ultimately be no need to think about cashing in this summer.
