Bruno Lage has moved to ease concerns about Fernando Marcal, after the Brazilian was substituted at half-time in Wolves’ victory over Sheffield United.
It has been a great day for the club today, with Wolves beating the Blades 3-0 in the FA Cup third round.
It was arguably not as good a performance as against Manchester United on Monday.
But it was an efficient job in the end from a Wolves side growing in confidence. They will now face Norwich City in the next round.
Lage made five changes to the side that beat United.
Rayan Ait-Nouri featured at left wing-back which meant that Marcal moved over to cover Romain Saiss’ absence.
It was a mixed outing for the Brazilian in a position he hasn’t played in for a quite a while.
He turned out there several times for his former club Lyon.
Marcal would only last half the game in the position though, with Joao Moutinho replacing him for the second-half.
Fans worried about the South American’s condition will be relieved to hear the issue is seemingly only minor.
Lage said after the game (via Express & Star): “He doesn’t have an injury for now, it was just a concern, but he wants to protect himself.
“I need to find a solution. I don’t have one centre-back, so I need to find a solution and keep going.
“Leander and Marcal did well and we are happy. We started the game with Marcal on the left and it’s not the same as Saiss, but he did well. At half-time I needed to change, moving Max to the left too. It’s not the same but the guys did well.”
Hopefully no lasting damage for Wolves star Marcal
Marcal had some dicey moments today, but on the whole he was fairly decent in the Saiss position.
It is always concerning when he doesn’t finish games. His injury record is not exactly perfect.
Hopefully Lage is playing it down and there is genuinely nothing too serious.
The last thing Wolves need right now is to have another injury to a defender.
At least Dendoncker looked quite good in the backline after Marcal had gone off.
