Bruno Lage has thrown down the gauntlet to Matija Sarkic, challenging the star to push number one Jose Sa.
The Montenegro international is now the number two at Molineux following the summer departure of John Ruddy.
The veteran left on the expiry of his contract, and Sarkic was then promoted to the first-team to become Sa’s back-up.
It was no less than he deserved.
Sarkic had enjoyed a really good spell at Birmingham City last season.
Unfortunately, that loan spell was cut short when he got injured in January. He dislocated his shoulder and required surgery, and so his season ended.
But he’s now a part of the first-team squad at Wolves, and Lage has challenged Sarkic to take on the Ruddy role.
He said (via Express & Star): “Jose Sa was at that level in his first Premier League season because of the competition that John brought to the team.
“Sarkic needs to do the same. When you are young you need to have goals in front of you.
“He needs to understand the first goal is to work hard every day to improve his qualities and understand which qualities to work to be better every day. The good thing that we can say about the environment we have, is that he can learn because Jose is a great professional.”
So far this season, Sarkic has made just one appearance for Wolves.
That was in the Carabao Cup game against Preston North End last month.
Matija Sarkic will believe he can displace Jose Sa at Wolves, as Bruno Lage challenges star
Lage has urged Sarkic to work hard and the 25-year-old will undoubtedly do that.
The star comes across as someone who’s very confident in his own ability.
He won’t be content playing second fiddle to £7 million signing Sa and will be looking to provide a big push in training.
And that is what Wolves need. It’s what Sa needs again, following the exit of Ruddy.
There will eventually come a period where Sa isn’t at it. He might make an error or two and the pressure will be on. It is important that Sarkic is ready to make the most of potential opportunities.
