Wolves have been dealt a fresh injury blow as Brazil national team manager Dorival Junior revealed an update on Matheus Cunha’s absence.
Wolves have been flying this season, but not without Gary O’Neil seeing his side suffer with key absences.
The Old Gold were without Pedro Neto for nine games earlier in the campaign due to a hamstring injury, as well as losing Hwang Hee-chan to the Asia Cup followed by a niggle too.
While getting the likes of Hwang and Neto back with the squad was celebrated, the manager was dealt a worrying blow when Matheus Cunha was forced to withdraw in the first half against Brentford.
What is known about the injury to Matheus Cunha
There was a dominant feeling of anxiety from the Wolves camp when Cunha hobbled off against the Bees, having played just 20 minutes of the contest.
Soon after the fixture, Sky Sports advised supporters that the Brazilian was unlikely to play again in the 2023/24 campaign, a report that was then deleted.
Luckily, the in-form striker provided a reassuring update on social media to put such rumours to bed, with O’Neil describing that the forward was feeling “optimistic” about returning to action.
“He’s really optimistic and feels good, he’s keen to get back as soon as he can. We haven’t set any timelines.”

What has been said about Matheus Cunha injury timeframe
While the boss wasn’t able to set a timeline on the potential return of the 24-year-old, Brazilian national team coach, Dorival Junior, hinted at just how long Cunha could be out.
Speaking to the media ahead of deciding his squad for the March international break, Junior touched upon the injury to the Wolves dynamo.
As relayed by journalist Fred Caldeira, Junior said:
“The injuries to Alisson, Matheus Cunha and João Pedro remove them from the options for being called up for the games against England and Spain.”
With the fixtures against England and Spain coming on the 23rd and 26th of March, it seems likely that Wolves will be without their star forward until then.
Before the international break, O’Neil will prepare his side to come up against, Sheffield United, Newcastle United, Fulham and Bournemouth in the Premier League, as well as an FA Cup duel with Brighton.
The absence of Cunha will be a big miss for the Old Gold, after finally seeing the Brazil international hit “unbelievable” form, as lauded by journalist Alex Richards.
While Junior’s comments aren’t reflective of when the 24-year-old is set to be back at domestic level, some insight is provided on how long he could yet be away from the action.
