Blow for Gary O’Neil as Wolves star forced off with injury after 20 minutes on international duty

Gary O’Neil has plenty of issues to deal with at the moment at Wolves, and the last thing he needs is more injuries.

Wanderers recently lost Yerson Mosquera for the season, after he suffered ACL and MCL damage. The injury to Mosquera left fans absolutely gutted, after his bright start to 2024/25.

He joins the likes of Boubacar Traore, Sasa Kalajdzic and Enso Gonzalez in the treatment room at Compton Park.

Last season, things really petered out for Wolves when injuries took hold of the squad. But they started to occur halfway through the campaign.

Gary O’Neil already has a few fitness-related problems and now, there is concern over another Wolves player.

It has been reported today that Hwang Hee-chan picked up an injury while playing a World Cup qualifying match for South Korea against Jordan.

As per journalist John Duerden, Hwang had to be helped off the pitch after 20 minutes, picking up what looked to be ‘a bad ankle injury’.

He was replaced by Eom Ji-sung.

Hwang now appears to be a doubt for South Korea’s next game, which is against Iraq on Tuesday.

More woes for Wolves star Hwang

This is a real shame for Hwang, and is the last thing he would have wanted to happen after a poor start to the new season.

This international break was a chance for him to try and rediscover his mojo and get back some confidence.

Hwang was one of the standout performers last term for O’Neil, after he scored 13 goals across all competitions. In 2024/25 though, Hwang has yet to find the back of the net in seven Premier League appearances.

Due to his poor form, he has lost prominence at Molineux. His last league start came against Chelsea in the second game of the season.

Currently, we do not know how serious this injury is for Hwang.

Some will turn around and say that to lose him right now would not be that big of a blow due to his form.

But we know O’Neil has always liked the player and what he brings to the table. He’ll certainly have everything crossed it’s not as bad as it looks.
