Ben Foster raves over £15m Wolves star who’s been ‘fantastic’ this season

Former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster believes Wolves and Gary O’Neil are in possession of a ‘fantastic’ talent right now.

It has been a terrific season so far from Wanderers, although the momentum has just slowed down a little lately due to several key players picking up injuries.

Wolves are without a win now in their last five games. But fans have been buoyed by the fact that Matheus Cunha has returned to fitness, with the Brazilian scoring two goals against Nottingham Forest on his first start since coming back.

Hwang Hee-chan also made his comeback against the Reds.

While key players have been out, it has been important for the others to step up – and one man who has done that is Joao Gomes.

The Brazilian has enjoyed a terrific first full season at Molineux, and has now come in for praise from Ben Foster…

Gomes has really come to the fore this season at Molineux.

He got some chance last term after signing for the club from Flamengo for £15 million in January, but was mainly used from the bench while Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Mario Lemina lined up in midfield.

This term, Gomes has been regular alongside Lemina, donning the number eight shirt.

He’s made 32 appearances across all competitions so far and has regularly come in for praise for his combative and tenacious performances. Dave Edwards recently labelled him the best ball-winner he has ever seen in a Wolves shirt – an opinion that many fans will share.

The Premier League have released a new video on their YouTube channel. It focuses on younger players making name for themselves in the top-flight, and Gomes is a player mentioned.

Ben Foster said of the star: “Fantastic season. Really good. Fantastic season for him and Wolves. I think to fit into a Gary O’Neil team you have to hand yourself over and work as a teammate. You’ve got to be combative. He likes to win the ball back, he likes to go forward, box-to-box.

“He’s a very typical workmanlike Gary O’Neil-type player. Wolves are benefitting from it and he’s getting up the other side of the pitch and scoring some goals at the same time.

“They’ve got a serious player on their hands.”

Joao Gomes is going to the top

Gomes has indeed been fantastic for Wolves in his first full season in the Premier League and many fans are seriously excited about how good he could become.

The 23-year-old has only been in England for 15 months and is already this brilliant. So he very much stands to become a top midfielder in the game.

Wolves just need to try their best to hang onto him. He could very well have a lot of interest this summer, and we have already have reports of interest from the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

But it is surely too soon to sell, considering what his market value could reach.

It’s vital the club keep hold of him for at least one more summer, before cashing in and turning over an absolutely huge profit.
