BBC Sport expert warns Vitor Pereira he must get one thing right if Wolves are to have better season next time

Although Wolves are virtually guaranteed to stay in the Premier League, the club haven’t had the best of seasons.

Vitor Pereira’s appointment following Gary O’Neil’s sacking has proven to be a good decision, but there will be several big changes in the summer.

Matheus Cunha is wanted by all the big clubs and, as a result, is likely to leave Molineux. There is also uncertainty over others, including soon-to-be free agents Nelson Semedo and Pablo Sarabia.

Vitor Pereira sent end-of-season warning

Set for an important summer transfer window, Pereira must make some key decisions.

And according to expert Phil McNulty, the most important task in the 56-year-old’s in-tray at the end of the season will be to ensure the club get their recruitment right.

“I think Wolves have some very talented players, although I fear they will lose their key striker Matheus Cunha this summer. He has got real star quality, which I suspect will attract bids from elsewhere,” he told BBC Sport.

“I really like what Vitor Pereira has done. He has achieved real unity with the fans, as proved by the players and staff taking a bow at both ends after the final whistle. There seems to be a genuine spirit and optimism there.

“As always, summer recruitment will be key, but even without Cunha I would not expect Wolves to struggle as they have this season next term.”

Failure to adequately replace the players who do depart will see Wolves risk a repeat of this season.

Plenty to look forward to

Pereira has had one transfer window to work in since he arrived in the Midlands. Wolves were the second highest spenders in January, but the Portuguese boss proved he can bring in the right faces.

Emmanuel Agbadou has been a superb defensive addition, with Marshall Munetsi one of the hardest-working players. And although Matt Doherty has kept him out of the first team picture, the future looks bright for youngster Nasser Djiga.

So even though McNulty’s concerns are valid, supporters should feel confident Wolves have the right man in charge when it comes to signings.

Cunha’s impending departure will be a blow, but Fosun will feel safe in the knowledge that Pereira probably already has the Brazilian’s replacement in mind.
