Arne Slot makes outrageous claim about one Wolves star ahead of Liverpool clash

Wolves will be looking for a source of magic when they take on title-chasing Liverpool on Sunday.

Wolves haven’t won at Anfield since 2010 when left-back Stephen Ward rifled home the winning goal. 15 years on from that famous victory, Vitor Pereira will be desperate to recreate history.

Admittedly, the chances of that happening are slim as the Old Gold find themselves in 17th position in the table, and only two points above the relegation zone.

However, Wolves were 2-0 victors over Aston Villa last time out in the Premier League and then secured their passage into the FA Cup fifth round with a win over Blackburn Rovers.

Matheus Cunha, who signed a long-term contract at Wolves, was a scorer in both of those fixtures and now Liverpool manager Arne Slot has praised the Brazilian.

Arne Slot praises Matheus Cunha

Cunha is Wolves’ top scorer this term with 12 and holds the key to survival. As many as six clubs were interested in Cunha during the January transfer window but of course, the 25-year-old remained at Molineux.

The former Atletico Madrid man has carried the goal-scoring burden this term alongside Jorgen Strand Larsen who has seven goals to his name, meanwhile, their third top scorer is wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri with just three goals.

Speaking ahead of the showdown at Anfield, Slot has explained why the Premier League is so hard compared to the Eredivisie, suggesting that Cunha could play for any of the top five teams in the league.

“He is the type of player I am referring to when I compare this league to the other one I worked in,” Slot said via Liverpool.com.

“Wolves are 17th and if you go to the Dutch league, there’s no player in the 17th-placed team who could play at Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord.

“But Cunha could play in a top-five team in England. That shows why it’s so hard in this league.”

Liverpool are one team to watch in Cunha transfer saga

Liverpool could be on the hunt for a new striker in the summer. Darwin Nunez could exit the club following a period of struggle, with Slot needing a quality centre-forward to rival Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo.

Cunha, who boasts a £62.5 million release clause, could be of interest to the champions-elect, with the match at Anfield acting as an audition for the Brazilian.

Although Cunha committed his future to the club, many accept that their star forward is likely to leave at the end of the season, perhaps fulfilling his ambitions of playing in the Champions League.

It hasn’t been said whether Liverpool are one of the six teams interested in Wolves’ No.10 however, selling Nunez would open up a forward spot and Slot’s comments suggest he’s an admirer of him.
