Andy Thompson thinks one Wolves player should really be scoring more goals

He was the match-winner on Sunday, but Pablo Sarabia should be scoring more goals in the eyes of Wolves legend Andy Thompson.

Wolves recorded a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Molineux, and it was very much a game of two halves.

Gary O’Neil‘s side were pretty good in the first-half, but really poor in the second and were somewhat fortunate to come away with all three points. That said, Jose Sa didn’t have a great deal to do and United failed to capitalise after Wolves got the jitters.

It was Pablo Sarabia who got the game’s only goal, and it was a brilliant header from a Rayan Ait-Nouri cross.

Such moments of quality are why Wolves signed him, but Thompson feels he should probably be scoring more than he does…

Sarabia’s goal on Sunday against Sheffield United was only his fourth in Wolves colours since signing for the club in January 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain.

It was his 36th appearance for the club, meaning he strikes once every nine games for Wanderers.

This is a rate that could probably be better in the eyes of Thompson, although the former full-back did praise the £4.4 million Spaniard for the technical quality he brings to the team.

He said on Matchday Live Extra: “Of course (he should score more goals), with the ability that he’s got. There’s no doubting his ability. He’s come here with a pedigree. He’s come here as someone with quality and he’s been a player at some top-level clubs.

“He found it difficult for whatever reason (when he first arrived at Wolves), probably because of the pace of the league. But there’s no doubt about the ability he’s got. He can pick that pass out. But again, he’s probably disappointed with himself that he hasn’t got more goals. I just think he’s the one who can get the ball behind the back lines or can pick that pass out or the run of somebody.”

Thompson is right, but Sarabia is doing well for Wolves

Sarabia could possibly chip in with a few more goals, but Gary O’Neil will not mind one bit if he continues to play like he is doing and Wolves continue to pick up good results.

He may not score too many, but he certainly makes plenty of chances and obviously, his nine assists prove him to be a very good creator. Undoubtedly now, he’s one of Wolves’ most important players.

The main thing is that O’Neil continues to just get a tune out of Sarabia, whether it be in the form of assists or goals.

He is a top player. It took some time for him to find his feet in England, but it’s clear to see what he’s about.
