Andy Thompson suggests the one player who is setting an example to his Wolves teammates right now

Wolves are struggling again – but Andy Thompson has suggested one player is currently setting a shining example to his teammates.

Vitor Pereira oversaw another defeat in the Premier League on Monday, with Chelsea winning 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

It was a poor performance from Wolves, who conceded three goals for the third straight game in the league – with two coming from set-pieces.

Pereira has a lot of work to do to get this team performing, and the coming days in the transfer window will be hugely important.

Too many players have consistently underperformed.

But for Andy Thompson, there’s one man who can hold his head high at the moment.

Matheus Cunha came in for criticism from fans for looking disinterested against Chelsea, after claims had been made regarding him stalling over signing a new deal.

Rayan Ait-Nouri was also slammed by fans for his ‘lazy’ defending.

And there were several others who were just way short of the standards required.

But many Wolves fans heaped praise on Joao Gomes for his performance in midfield, with many feeling he was the only player showing a bit of fight and desire.

And his performance was also acknowledged by former Wolves full-back Andy Thompson, who said on Matchday Live Extra: “I’m watching Joao Gomes in the middle of midfield and he’s absolutely run his socks off with the way that he plays.

“He tries for everything. You can see the frustration on his face. I’m just saying him on his own, there’s some other players in there. But I’m looking at him throughout the game, that’s how we’ve got to be as a team. We’ve got to be hungry, we’ve got to hunt for the ball.”

Wolves are lucky to have Joao Gomes

Gomes was one of the few Wolves players who could hold his head high after the Chelsea game.

The £15 million (E&S) Brazilian was everywhere for Wolves and you could just tell how much getting a result meant to him. You can always tell.

Wolves have struggled this season and Gomes probably hasn’t been as good as he was last term. But his attitude and mentality have never been in question.

It’s just a shame that Wolves don’t have more players like him. Not long before he was sacked, Gary O’Neil talked up Gomes as an emerging leader at Wolves and certainly, he’s really played like someone who is taking responsibility lately.

Gomes has interest from several clubs and it’d be no surprise to see him leave in the summer – and his exit will sting for many if it happens.
