Andy Thompson shocked after seeing what Matheus Cunha kept doing for Wolves against Chelsea

Wolves lost for the third Premier League game in a row on Monday night, and Andy Thompson has criticised Matheus Cunha.

Wolves fell to a 3-1 defeat against Chelsea, and it is now 51 goals conceded in the Premier League.

A response was needed after the defeats to Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

But Wolves showed very little cutting edge in west London and were once again guilty of awful defending, with two more goals going in from second phases of set-pieces.

It was a night to forget for Matheus Cunha, who was criticised by fans for looking disinterested.

Ahead of the game, there were claims about Cunha and his agent stalling over a new contract at Wolves, with some feeling the transfer speculation was weighing on his mind.

It was a poor performance, and Andy Thompson couldn’t quite believe one thing that kept happening during last night’s game.

If Wolves were going to get anything against Chelsea, then Pereira was going to need Cunha to deliver.

While the Blues had not been in good form heading into the game, it was still a very tough opponent and Wolves needed their big guns to show up.

Cunha didn’t, and when things didn’t come off his reactions were often poor.

And things didn’t come off quite often, with Sofascore data showing that he actually lost the ball 18 times. That was the most of any Wolves player, and only Noni Madueke lost the ball more (20) out of players in the whole game.

Speaking on Matchday Live Extra, former Old Gold full-back Andy Thompson shared his frustrations.

He said: “If we haven’t got him firing on all cyllinders, we’re in all kinds of trouble. He’s one of our big massive threats. He just didn’t look himself. There was that little pause in his running, that little hesitation.

“How many times did he get the ball took off him, because players were getting back at him. I haven’t seen that all season when he’s been playing. Once he’s got the ball, they ain’t catching him when he’s in the right frame of mind.”

Wolves need Cunha back on song

Wolves losing the last three games doesn’t feel all that surprising.

Cunha was unavailable for the games with Forest and Newcastle and then against Chelsea, there seemed to be something going on with him.

It was a poor performance, but more concerning was Cunha’s body language, which Pereira criticised after the game.

It is now paramount that Wolves officials sort this situation out and put an end to the speculation surrounding the Brazilian.

It’s not helping anyone. Wolves are in trouble and need their talisman back on song.
