Andy Thompson shares what he honestly made of Emmanuel Agbadou in Bristol City win

Wolves made their first signing of the January transfer window last week, and Emmanuel Agbadou has already made his first-team debut.

Wolves signed Agbadou from Reims for a reported fee of £16.6 million.

With the likes of Craig Dawson and Toti Gomes both injured, it meant Vitor Pereira threw Agbadou straight in against Bristol City.

He played on the left of a back three, which is not his usual position, with Matt Doherty on the right and Santiago Bueno in the middle.

Pereira praised Agbadou, and was left impressed by his consistency.

After the game, Agbadou revealed that Pereira told him he likes his quality on the ball, and it seems like he could have a big impact on that backline in the second half of the season.

Former Wolves defender Andy Thompson was also left impressed.

It was great to see Agbadou getting minutes under his belt for Wolves so soon after signing.

Wolves have a big game in the Premier League against Newcastle United on Wednesday, and the likelihood is that Agbadou will be starting.

So for him to have played against Bristol City is ideal.

Agbadou was pretty good at Ashton Gate. He wasn’t perfect and did give the ball away a few times, but by and large, he enjoyed a good showing and Thompson enjoyed his performance.

He said (via Wolves official): “I love watching him. He was comfortable on the ball. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not going to get the time and space in the Premier League as he did today, but I think that he grew into the game. He started to keep things simple. I think he came to realise that he can’t do the things that he probably did before in France.

“He looks like he’s got all the attributes that we’ve been looking for in a central defender, but he needs to be careful in the Premier League, because they’re cleverer, they’re stronger, they’re sharper. He’s got that physicality where he’s able to protect the ball, but he’s got to know when to get rid of it and when to get play that ball forward.”

A good start for Agbadou

Agbadou looked the part against Bristol City, even if he did sometimes give the ball away.

He looked pretty solid, and you get the feeling that he would be far more comfortable in Matt Doherty’s position on the right of a three.

But the physicality he brings is nice, and he looks to have good pace and strength.

He’ll be thrown in at the deep end a bit against Newcastle, who are in red-hot form right now in the Premier League. But fans will hope he can rise to the occasion.

Keeping Alexander Isak in check will certainly endear him to the Molineux faithful.
