Wolves still haven’t won a game in the Premier League, and Andy Thompson has now bemoaned one aspect of the team’s play after the latest defeat to Sunderland.
Wolves remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, after losing 2-0 to the Black Cats on Saturday.
It had been seen as an opportunity for Wolves, after the improvements we saw against Tottenham Hotspur and then Brighton.
But Wolves turned in an insipid performance at the Stadium of Light, and supporters that made the trip up let their feelings be known at the full-time whistle.
Vitor Pereira was recently backed by Wolves with a three-year contract, a decision that is now looking very questionable.
The manager will surely now start to come under serious pressure unless he turns things around.
Pereira has so many things to fix, but Andy Thompson highlighted one glaring issue after yesterday’s defeat.
Andy Thompson blasts Wolves’ ability in possession

Wolves have had real creativity problems this season.
It’s just five goals scored in eight games so far, and Wolves just aren’t threatening opposition defences anywhere near as much as last season.
Part of the reason for that is having lost game-changing players, like Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri.
But this crop of players are really struggling – and Andy Thompson believes there is a major issue in terms of playing with tempo.
Accusing Wolves of lacking urgency on the ball, he said on Matchday Live Extra: “The problem we’ve got at the moment, is that our passing is too slow.
“It’s allowing teams to regroup. It allows them to get back into the positions they want to. I’ll make an example of one in the first-half. When we were passing the ball across the back, it was allowing the opposition to close us down.
“By the time the ball’s getting to us, the players are getting there, because there’s no pace on the pass.
“The modern-day pitches are watered and wet, so it’s quite slick. That passing should be a lot sharper. There’s no way they should be getting anywhere near us passing across the back. But because of the tempo of the play and the slow build-up, it just plays into the hands of the opposition unfortunately.”
Wolves in huge trouble
Thompson makes a very valid point about Wolves being too lethargic on the ball and inviting pressure. Lacking tempo is also making it difficult for Wolves to break lines and create more chances.
But sadly, this is just one of many issues right now.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
15 | 8 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 7 | 13 | -6 | 8 | |
16 | 7 | 2 | 1 | 4 | 9 | 12 | -3 | 7 | |
17 | 8 | 2 | 1 | 5 | 9 | 15 | -6 | 7 | |
18 | 8 | 1 | 2 | 5 | 5 | 15 | -10 | 5 | |
19 | 7 | 1 | 1 | 5 | 6 | 16 | -10 | 4 | |
20 | 8 | 0 | 2 | 6 | 5 | 16 | -11 | 2 |
Wolves still aren’t good enough at the back, and also aren’t clinical enough in the decisive moments. The team also lacks leaders.
It all makes for an extremely worrying situation, that may not even be fixable with a change of manager or January splurge.
