Andy Thompson and Lee Naylor in firm agreement about one controversy in Wolves 2-2 Crystal Palace

Wolves will once again go in search of their first Premier League win of the season this weekend as the club host Southampton.

It is simply a massive game, and one that could cost Gary O’Neil his job if he does not win.

Fosun recently backed O’Neil after the awful defeat to Brentford. But the Wolves owners will surely find it hard to keep the faith if Wanderers don’t get three points against a fellow struggling side.

Fosun are ‘desperate’ for O’Neil to turn things around, but not beating Southampton may be the final straw.

Wolves could only draw with Crystal Palace last time out, and fans were left very disappointed after seeing it as a winnable game.

Palace were missing some key players like Eberechi Eze, and the Eagles represented a decent chance for a first win for Wolves in front of a home crowd.

Wolves did take the lead after coming from behind, but could not see the game out, conceding an equaliser to Marc Guehi

Then in injury time, Palace had a goal chalked off when VAR deemed Jose Sa to have had two hands on the ball.

For Andy Thompson and Lee Naylor, Wolves were very lucky to come away with a point.

Wolves have had more than their fair share of controversial decisions go against them in recent times.

The club were keen to see the back of VAR this season, as they tried to table a motion to get it scrapped. But no other clubs supported Wolves.

For former full-backs Andy Thompson and Lee Naylor, VAR actually did Wolves a favour on Saturday.

The goal scored by Jean-Philippe Mateta was chalked off after Daniel Munoz was deemed to have fouled Sa.

Thompson said (via Wolves official): “I’ve looked at it a couple of times, and I think we’ve got lucky. I don’t think he’s [Sa] got hold of it. I think it’s a big let-off because I don’t think Sa really had hold of the ball.

“I think Munoz had the momentum going into it, and I think we got away with that one. It’s probably the first time VAR has gone for us. If it was for us, I’d be screaming a goal. It was one of those which has fine margins and I think if the referee had given it, I don’t think it would have been overruled.”

Naylor added: “We looked at each other, didn’t we, and thought, ‘Wow. We’ve got away with one.”

Wolves deserve a bit of luck

Wolves have been on the receiving end of far too many controversial decisions in recent times which have cost the club points.

So it was a pleasant surprise to see Mateta’s goal actually be ruled out on Saturday.

But Thompson and Naylor are both correct – Wolves got away with one, because Sa never had total control of the ball. His hands and Munoz’s foot touch the ball at the exact same time, and then it spills out of the goalkeeper’s grasp.

If this had happened at the other end of the pitch with Dean Henderson, and Matheus Cunha or Jorgen Strand Larsen had a goal ruled out, Wolves fans would be livid.
