Andros Townsend points out why Wolves’ start to 2025/26 is much worse than last season

Wolves are in all kinds of trouble at the moment – and Andros Townsend has outlined why the club have made a worse start than last season.

On Sunday, Wolves lost again in the Premier League, this time to Burnley at Molineux.

After battling back from 2-0 down, Wolves conceded an equaliser in the last minute, prompting anger in the South Bank after the full-time whistle.

Jorgen Strand Larsen and Vitor Pereira both had exchanges with supporters, who let rip following yet another awful performance.

Wolves are still winless in the league, and sit bottom of the table on just two points.

Relegation is starting to look inevitable, but for now Pereira is being backed by his superiors. But he needs results against Chelsea and Fulham, if he makes it that far.

Wolves have started in a similar way to how they did last season – but Andros Townsend has explained why it’s worse this time around.

Why Wolves have made a worse start than last season despite having same points total

Last season, Wolves started really badly under Gary O’Neil, who was eventually sacked following a 2-0 home defeat to Ipswich Town in December.

There are parallels between how Wolves have started this season and last.

Interestingly, Wolves sit on two points now after nine games, which is the exact same tally the club had last term at the same stage.

But for Andros Townsend, Wolves have made a worse start this time around for one key reason.

He said on the Monday Night Club: “I think last season they had a tough start, whereas this season it’s completely different. They’ve had winnable fixtures to start the season.

“The last two, losing to the two promoted sides. You target those games, right we’re going to get six points, four points minimum. But to get zero points, there’s got to be alarm bells ringing now. Not only in the dressing room, but upstairs as well. When are we going to have to push the button, who’s available, is it panic time? These conversations are going to be happening soon. They have lost against sides they should be winning, if you want to survive.”

Wolves’ start to 25/26 is definitely worse than last season

Although the points tally is the same, there can surely be no doubt that Wolves’ start to this season has been worse than last under Gary O’Neil.

Wolves could not buy a clean sheet under O’Neil, and were shipping goals in diabolical fashion. Especially on set-pieces.

But at least Wanderers were still scoring goals, and had players in the team who could come up with moments of magic.

Wolves don’t have those kinds of players now, and have been toothless this term. The team also have the second-worst defensive record in the league after West Ham United, having conceded 19 goals so far.

As Townsend points out, Wolves’ awful run has included back to back defeats against newly promoted clubs Sunderland and Burnley. And Leeds United also beat Wolves a few weeks ago.

So all in all, Wolves’ start to the current campaign has been worse than 2024/25.
