Alan Shearer pulls no punches as he reacts to Wolves’ impending move for Rob Edwards

Wolves are set to announce that Rob Edwards will be their new manager, and last night pundit Alan Shearer reacted to the news.

Wolves have spent the past week searching for a new head coach following the sacking of Vitor Pereira.

Initially, it had looked as though Gary O’Neil would be his successor. But O’Neil withdrew from the running, prompting Wolves to move for Edwards.

Last night on Saturday Night Football, O’Neil explained why he didn’t return to Wolves, stating that he just didn’t feel like it was the right time or fit.

Wolves are now moving for Edwards, who did not manage Middlesbrough yesterday against Birmingham City, amid ongoing speculation.

It is a situation that has caught the attention of a lot of football fans, because Boro have not been happy with Wolves’ approach and have been disappointed with Edwards’ stance of wanting to leave.

And last night, Alan Shearer shared what he has made of the situation.

Wolves fell to another defeat in the Premier League yesterday, losing 3-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Wolves were stubborn for a large part of the game, keeping the Blues at bay. But there was next to no threat, and eventually pressure from Chelsea told.

Edwards has a huge job on his hands.

And last night on Match of the Day, Shearer offered his opinion on Edwards going to Wolves – believing it to be harsh on Middlesbrough and a big risk from Edwards.

He said: “I get his connection with Wolves and where he is and that he has a house in the particular area. But I think Middlesbrough gave him a great opportunity and I think it’s very, very harsh on them and I think it’s a huge risk from his point of view because I don’t see them staying up at all.

“I don’t see enough ability in that squad and I don’t see it being very inviting for any player to go there in January either. So it’s a big gamble.”

Wolves planning for relegation with Rob Edwards appointment

So it seems only a matter of time before Edwards is officially announced as Wolves’ new manager.

It has been a controversial move and Boro fans are understandably unhappy.

There are also plenty of Wolves fans who are not sold on this move, but we’ll now see what Edwards can do with this bunch of players.

But Shearer makes some good points in his analysis.

Edwards himself is taking a huge risk. He was doing well at Middlesbrough, but is walking away to take on a huge job at Molineux.

One does wonder if Wolves officials feel that Edwards’ experience of the Championship has been a factor in this move, with the club looking more and more likely to suffer relegation.
