Alan Shearer names Ruben Neves in his latest PL Team of the Week after Liverpool display

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has selected Wolves star Ruben Neves in his latest Premier League Team of the Week.

The midfielder was part of a 3-0 win against Liverpool for Wanderers, in what was arguably the team’s best result of the season.

Julen Lopetegui’s side ran Liverpool close twice in January in the FA Cup.

And it was third time lucky on Saturday, with Wolves far superior at Molineux.

An own goal from Joel Matip set the ball rolling for the hosts after good work from Pablo Sarabia to play in Hwang Hee-chan. The South Korea’s cut-back was turned in by the defender.

Debutant Craig Dawson then doubled Wolves’ lead, lashing in after Maximilian Kilman’s header was blocked.

And in the second-half, Neves made sure of the points as he got up to support Adama Traore in a counter-attack. The Spaniard played the ball across and Neves controlled perfectly before passing the ball past Alisson.

Neves’ all-round performance was excellent.

He was able to play a bit further forward, with Mario Lemina holding.

It was a move that saw Neves thrive, and his performance has led to an inclusion in Shearer’s latest Team of the Week.

He said of the 25-year-old (Premier League official): “Crowned an excellent all-round performance with a well-taken goal against Liverpool.”

It really was an all-action display from the Portuguese star.

According to Sofascore data, Neves made seven clearances, three tackles and two blocks. He also completed 41/49 passes (84%).

Ruben Neves was superb against Liverpool and is well worth his Team of the Week selection by Alan Shearer

It was very much a captain’s performance from Neves against Liverpool.

He was everywhere, and it was especially brilliant to see him make a lung-busting run to get into the box for his goal.

That kind of thing is not very typical of him. But maybe it’s a tactic that could be used more going forwards.

That’s because Lemina looked excellent in a more defensive role. Arguably, the Gabon international should also have made Shearer’s Team of the Week.
