Alan Shearer hails Wolves star Ruben Neves on Match of the Day

Alan Shearer last night hailed Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, following his display against Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

Wanderers took a giant step towards safety with a 2-0 win over the Eagles.

Wolves were not particularly good at Molineux. Certainly, they were nowhere near the level they showed against Chelsea and Brentford recently.

But the result was all that mattered.

Wolves are now eight points clear of the relegation zone.

The gap was nine points, but Nottingham Forest’s win over Brighton last night has cut it ever so slightly.

There were plenty of brilliant individual performances for Wolves.

But it was Neves who came in for praise on Match of the Day last night.

Shearer said of the Portuguese maestro: “Ruben Neves was back in the team. I thought he was the best player on the park. Everything he did I thought was superb.

“Whether it was tackling, the defensive side, the passing range. When you give him enough time on the ball like that in the quarter-back position he can hurt you with those passes.

“Neves got his reward for a good performance, stuck the penalty away really well. Good performance from him.”

It was nice to see Neves coming in for some high praise from Premier League legend Shearer last night.

He really was brilliant for Wolves, and definitely silenced a few critics with his display.

Had it not been for him and Diego Costa and the fight they showed, Wanderers might well have dropped points last night.

He really led from the front, and Wolves are now able to breathe easier with an eight-point gap.
