Alan Shearer clears Rob Edwards of blame, as Wolves warning delivered ahead of Anfield trip

Wolves did not benefit from the common football trope of the ‘new manager bounce’, with Rob Edwards still yet to win a game, and Alan Shearer has shared why he thinks that has been the case.

The Old Gold have yet to even pick up a point under the new head coach, who is set to take charge of his seventh game.

Edwards could join Mick McCarthy in infamy as the only manager to lose seven in a row in the Premier League with a new side.

Additionally, Wolves could match a 123-year record if they fail to win against Liverpool.

The odds are certainly not in the Wanderers’ favour, with Opta giving Edwards a slim chance at doing so, but Alan Shearer has sympathy for the head coach.

Despite the run of six defeats, Alan Shearer is not pointing the blame towards Wolves head coach Rob Edwards but instead the squad-building from the summer.

The criticism of the summer business is certainly one most Wolves fans will agree with, as it has been a regular sticking point for supporters.

When it comes to the Old Gold’s chances in the league, the former Newcastle striker believes Wolves are as good as relegated.

Speaking on his column for Metro, Shearer said, “Wolves struggle to score goals and struggle to keep them out. There’s no hope for them; they’re already relegated as far as I’m concerned.

“You wouldn’t want to carry that tag around being the worst Premier League team ever. Somehow, they’ve got to get some belief to try and get out of that, but I don’t see it. They haven’t improved under the new manager, but I suspect that is because of the players they’ve sold and not replaced.”

Of course, it is then no surprise that Shearer believes Wolves will lose to Liverpool, stating, “I don’t see anything other than a home win.”

He joins Chris Sutton in predicting a Wolves loss, but Sutton believes the Old Gold could stand a chance.

New era for Wolves without Jeff Shi

Jeff Shi believed Wolves had a good summer, and it turns out that was far from the case.

Nathan Shi has now stepped into the role on an interim basis, and the hope among supporters is he will operate in a completely different way from his predecessor.

The interim executive chairman has started off his time by telling fans he will build trust through actions, not words, which is certainly a decent starting point.

As Alan Shearer said, Wolves are in this position through poor squad building, and if they want to get promoted next season back to the top flight, they will need to have a completely opposite transfer window.

Work looks to be underway already, as Sam Surridge has been targeted by Wolves.
