Abel Ferreira makes Wolves decision after rejecting chance to replace Nuno Espírito Santo

Wolves have made an approach for Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira.

Ferreira is top of the league in Brazil and has attracted plenty of European interest as a result — the latest from Wolves.

When Nottingham Forest sacked Nuno Espirito Santo, Ferreira was first on their list of replacements.

He would turn them down promptly, refusing to even begin talks. But Wolves got in touch with the Portuguese all the same, hoping for a change of heart.

Wolves get the same answer as Forest from Abel Ferreira

Ferreira is a relative unknown, at least in English football, so fans won’t be devastated to hear he has turned Wolves down.

As ESPN in Brazil report: “The offer was promptly rejected by the coach, who is focused on his work at Palmeiras, especially in the lead-up to the CONMEBOL Libertadores final and the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship , a competition currently led by Palmeiras.

“Last October, ESPN also reported that Nottingham Forest, another Premier League team, had made a move for the Portuguese manager to fill the vacancy left by Nuno Espírito Santo, but he behaved similarly and refused to even begin negotiations.”

This won’t be the last such story that runs around Molineux this week. We’re bound to hear another instance of Wolves being told no before we can even get our hopes up.

Ferreira was certainly a surprise link, especially considering the criteria that is assumedly being used.

Two different criteria have been mentioned in recent days as preferences for Wolves in their manager search.

Sam Allardyce said Wolves want a younger coach, which he thought would rule him out of contention when he was linked with the job. Ferreira certainly has youth on his side at just 46.

But as well as that, it has been reported that Wolves have a preference for a UK manager. That’s why Rob Edwards is considered their top target.

Ok, so there’s some room for flexibility. There should be. But bringing another manager over from Brazil who doesn’t know the league is a risk when you consider the job that’s ahead of them.
