A ‘dark horse’ is emerging as a shock candidate to become Wolves captain, it ‘makes sense’

Several players in the Wolves squad will be fancying their chances of becoming club captain.

While Wolves wait to learn what Nelson Semedo’s plan is, the Old Gold will begin to consider who could take the armband from the Portugal international.

The 31-year-old has a contract offer on the table from Wolves, but is also entertaining interest from clubs overseas, including his beloved Benfica.

Vitor Pereira will need to find a replacement for Semedo at right-back, and additionally, will need to decide on his next captain.

Positives listed about Jorgen Strand Larsen becoming Wolves captain

Semedo is a fantastic leader at Wolves, which makes the uncertainty around his future all the more frustrating.

Replacing the player and the leader that he is will be a struggle, but fortunately, Pereira has options to choose from.

Wolves fans have discussed who would be a suitable next captain, mentioning the likes of Joao Gomes, Emmanuel Agbadou and Toti Gomes.

Club expert Liam Keen did the same, compiling a list of six candidates for Express and Star

Keen, who broke the news of Nasser Djiga’s loan move to Rangers, believes there could be a ‘dark horse’ up for consideration to take the armband.

“It may come as a surprise to some, but Larsen is a dark horse to become the next captain, and it makes sense for a lot of reasons.”

The Wolves reporter shared why, in his opinion, Jorgen Strand Larsen could be a surprise shout to become Pereira’s skipper.

“He speaks multiple languages – including being fluent in English and Spanish – is highly intelligent and liked among the squad.

“Larsen is a bigger personality and demanding of those around him, as well as being a good communicator.”

The Norwegian might not be at the top of the list of candidates to become Wolves captain, but the points that Keen raised carry weight.

The ‘biggest problem’ about Strand Larsen captaincy claim

Like any debate, there are cons as well as pros when it comes to Strand Larsen’s positioning in the talk to become club captain.

Aside from being only 25, Keen also noted what the ‘biggest problem’ for the former Celta Vigo star is.

“He is potentially a little young at 25-years-old, but the biggest problem is the position he plays on the pitch.

“Midfielders and defenders – like everyone else on this list – make naturally good captains. Public perception is that forwards often do not make good skippers and while that is not always the case, Larsen would have to overcome that preconception.”

There have been doubts over whether Joao Gomes would fall under the pressure of being captain, and Keen believes the same hurdle could limit Strand Larsen.

“Similarly, he already faces a lot of pressure to score goals and it may be unwise to put more pressure on him by making him captain when he needs to focus on his game.”

There’s a lot for Pereira to consider, but the most important thing is that Wolves’ captaincy curse doesn’t continue, with a committed player in for the long run needing to be trusted with the honour.
