Wolves’ terrible start to the season continued once more against Everton, as the Toffees beat the Old Gold 3-2 at Molineux.
Hwang Hee-chan and Rodrigo Gomes were on the scoresheet, but it was not enough on the day to get a result.
Wolves fans will not be happy with their side’s performance, as frankly, it was subpar. However, there was a moment in the second-half that has left them feeling frustrated.
In the 71st minute, Hugo Bueno took the ball from Fer Lopez, and wriggled into the box. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye would then seemingly trip the Spaniard with the referee waving away appeals for a penalty.
Wolves fans react to Hugo Bueno penalty not given
It was a decision that has not gone down well with the Wolves fanbase.
At the time of the incident, Vitor Pereira’s side were trailing the game 3-1, and while they did eventually score a second, having the chance to score eight minutes earlier would have given them a better chance at a result.
Wolves fans took to X to express their anger at the decision with one saying, ‘How is that not a penalty for Wolves? VAR is totally unfit for purpose, it interferes in a perfectly good goal in the Fulham game then contact on Bueno in the box, no pen.’
Another supporter said, ‘100% that was a pen.’
One Wolves fan questioned the decision by saying, ‘Everyday. [On the] other end it’s a pen.’
Whereas another simply called it ‘stonewall penalty’ and one Wolves fan says Ndiaye, ‘100% clips [Bueno’s] feet in the box.’
Penalty decision does not change poor Wolves performance
While the penalty decision was frustrating, it does not hide the poor showing from the home side. Everton were simply the better side on the day, and ultimately deserved the win.
Wolves could be in serious trouble this season. They have got three losses on the bounce, and have yet to pick up any points.
The Old Gold have some tough fixtures coming up, with Newcastle and Tottenham away in the next three. Meanwhile potential relegation rivals such as Sunderland keep putting points on the board.
Vitor Pereira may struggle to find three other teams worse than Wolves at the moment, and that is a nightmare scenario for the manager.
