Wolves equal appalling unwanted club record as winless Premier League run continues vs Liverpool

Wolves are setting records for all the wrong reasons this season as their poor start to the season continued against Liverpool.

Wolves were written off before a ball was even kicked against Liverpool. The Old Gold had recorded just one point from the board heading into the game while the Reds had only dropped points at home to Nottingham Forest, winning the rest.

To make matters worse, a virus had knocked Gary O’Neil’s men six as they prepared for this encounter, with Craig Dawson one of the players affected as a result.

The hosts didn’t let their recent hardships affect them and just like in previous matches, were fast out of the blocks without really creating a clear-cut chance.

They were eventually punished as Ibrahima Konate scored on the stroke of half-time. Rayan Ait-Nouri then gave Wolves hope with an unlikely equaliser before Nelson Semedo’s clumsy challenge on Jota moments later resulted in a penalty, with Mohamed Salah converting.

In the final half an hour of the game, the home crowd would have expected Gary O’Neil to throw the kitchen sink at the visitors but they rarely showed attacking intent and only made two touches inside the opposition box in the last 34 minutes.

As a result, Wolves were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool on Saturday evening and in the process, equalled an unwanted club record.

Wolves have made their joint-worst start to a season in their history

Wolves have been dealt an unforgiving hand when it comes to the fixtures, playing Aston Villa, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool in five of their first six.

Whilst supporters didn’t expect them to win many points from those matches, the fact they’ve only taken – and that was against Nottingham Forest – suggests O’Neil’s men are in for a long season.

As pointed out by Sky Sports, this is now their joint-worst start to a league season after six games in their history, totalling just one point in 1926/27 in the second tier, 1964/65 top flight and 2002/03 Premier League.

Failing to turn the tide on their current slump after winning one of their last 16 games in the league could see the Wanderers make more unwanted history, and that could be detrimental to O’Neil’s job.

Wolves were frustrating in the defeat vs Liverpool

Considering many people expected Liverpool to trounce Wolves before the game, a defeat by one goal isn’t the worst scoreline but that doesn’t tell the full story.

Wolves had an opportunity here to catch the Reds when they weren’t at their flowing best but instead of showing ambition late on, O’Neil’s men rarely – if ever – tested Alisson with a meaningful attempt on goal.

It left supporters feeling frustrated when the defenders were keeping the ball among themselves late on instead of launching it forward.

This was perhaps another example of O’Neil failing Wolves tactically and with his substitutions, as questions could now be asked of the Englishman.
