Wolves’ defending labelled ‘comical’ by Sky Sports pundit after they slumped to another Premier League defeat

Wolves’ Premier League survival hopes took another big hit on Saturday afternoon as Ipswich scored a late goal to win 2-1.

In a must-win match, the Old Gold once again failed to turn up as newly-promoted Ipswich moved three points clear of Gary O’Neil’s side.

A Matt Doherty own goal opened the scoreline before Matheus Cunha equaliser in the second half.

However, more terrible set-piece defending allowed Jake Taylor to net a stoppage-time winner to keep Wolves 19th in the Premier League.

Fans have once again demanded for O’Neil to be sacked after multiple Wolves players were involved in a brawl at full-time

During the match itself, the Old Gold’s defence took the spotlight with more horrendous errors.

Against Ipswich, it was highly important that the hosts get off to the right start and ensure that the Molineux crowd had something to cheer about.

Instead, Wolves were appalling and gifted the Tractor Boys the lead through a series of errors.

A loose ball in the box proved too difficult for the defence to handle as Toti Gomes’ clearance smacked off Doherty and rolled into the net.

Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd was far from impressive with his passage of play as he stated: “It’s a comedy of errors. Gary O’Neil will be absolutely fuming.

“It’s an incredible own goal.”

Wolves’ backline wouldn’t be able to compete in the Championship

It is fair to say that Wolves’ defence is dreadful. The club have now shipped 40 goals in 16 Premier League matches and it could have easily been more.

Ipswich were unlucky not to finish off the match earlier in the second half when Liam Delap missed an open net.

With the defence constantly carved open so easily, they are evidently not capable of playing Premier League football, and on current form might not be able to compete in the Championship.

As it stands, relegation looks certain with the club an absolute mess from top to bottom. However, while many aspects are to blame for the downfall, the appalling performance of the defence week in, and week out has arguably been the most shocking.
