Wolves ‘Champions League’ claim made after winless run continues against Arsenal

Wolves’ performance against Arsenal may have been one of their best of the season, but the problem of getting points on the board still persists.

A point against the Premier League leaders would have been an excellent result, but in truth, with the situation the Old Gold are in, it would have done little to change their situation.

In the end, Tolu Arokodare’s equaliser would prove unfruitful, as Arsenal snatched the three points back with just minutes left to play.

There was some controversy with the Gunners’ opening goal, and PGMOL have responded to the question of Saka being offside.

However, whether or not a decision was right or wrong matters little after the fact, and if Wolves are to survive now, Rob Edwards has been told exactly what it will take.

Despite defeat, there were plenty of positives to take away from that Wolves performance.

Tony Cascarino says what Wolves need to do to now survive

For many, survival for Wolves is already out of the question, and the gap to safety is too far to claw back.

It would take something truly special for the Old Gold to pull off this level of a great escape, and a former Premier League footballer has shared exactly what he thinks that is.

Tony Cascarino was left impressed with Wolves’ performance, but he feels they must go on an extraordinary run of results to turn the ship around.

Cascarino said (via talkSPORT), “Do I think they are doomed? Absolutely, there is no way Rob is getting out of this malaise of results. They are on too many defeats.

“If they are to stay up, they will need Champions League form to stay up. That’s a high bar. They are not going to be a team that goes and picks up a few points here and there. They need Champions League form to survive.”

Put yourself in Rob Edwards’ shoes. How do you lift the Wolves players’ spirits after losing in the manner they did vs Arsenal?

Right now, the allure of a single Premier League win evades the Wanderers. Their last victory in England’s top flight came in April against Leicester City.

The likelihood of such a run as suggested by Cascarino seems far-fetched, but they did at least prove one thing against Arsenal.

Wolves proved they can compete

Against Arsenal, Wolves did prove they can go toe-to-toe against any team in the Premier League. They frustrated the current best side in England.

The Old Gold may lack the quality to stay up this season, but they must not go down without a fight. The effort was clear to see at the Emirates.

Alan Shearer labelled Wolves ‘brilliant’, and the pundit could not be more correct in his verdict.

There is plenty to build on from that performance, and if that 90 minutes was anything to go by, the Wanderers will certainly start accumulating points soon.
