Wolves ace proved he’s Vitor Pereira’s most important player vs Chelsea – he was more creative than Matheus Cunha

Wolves suffered their 14th defeat of the Premier League season against Chelsea, but one player stood out.

It was an outing to forget for the Old Gold at Stamford Bridge, as Wolves lost 3-1 to Chelsea to extend their poor start to the year.

Wolves are still without a point in 2025, making for worrying times for Vitor Pereira, who has overcome his honeymoon period at Molineux.

The result leaves the Midlands club sitting level on points with 18th-place Ipswich Town, putting pressure on the Wolves squad to promptly pick up points.

Joao Gomes impressed for Wolves against Chelsea

Just as Wolves seemed to have turned a corner, the Old Gold have shown glimpses of their old ways in their previous three games.

Against Chelsea, several players were slammed for their performances, with Jamie Carragher laying into Jose Sa.

Sa wasn’t the only player placed under the microscope, as Wolves fans took aim at Matheus Cunha however, on a dreary night in the capital, it wasn’t all bad for the squad.

When Wolves needed a source of inspiration, up stepped Joao Gomes, who took it upon himself to try and impact the game for his club.

As seen above, the Brazilian worked tirelessly in all areas to attempt to right Wolves’ wrongs, winning 11 duels and contributing heavily in the final third where possible.

Gomes’ three key passes were the most of any Wolves player on the pitch, including key creator Cunha, who recorded only one.

Such level of performance has been seen consistently this season, as the Brazilian continues to impress following his mere £15m transfer back in 2023.

Significant work for Wolves to do in next five games

Unfortunately against Chelsea, there weren’t 11 Gomes’ on the pitch as Wolves struggled to really make their presence known in the capital.

It’s a problem for Pereira considering what is still to come for the Old Gold, who are sitting on the fence between relegation and safety.

The next five Premier League fixtures will not fill the Midlands side with much confidence, with a trip to Arsenal coming next before challenges against Aston Villa, Liverpool, Bournemouth and Fulham.

Playing four of the top eight in their next five games is not what Pereira needs at this moment in time, with a lot of talking for the players to do on the pitch to put things right.
