What Matheus Cunha immediately did to Wolves fans at Molineux after scoring vs Tottenham

Wolves made it four wins on the spin in the Premier League, beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 at Molineux.

Wolves were rather gifted their first two goals courtesy of poor goalkeeping by Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs pulled one back early in the second-half through Mathys Tel.

But Wolves restored their two-goal lead when Jorgen Strand Larsen tapped home after industrious work by Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Spurs wouldn’t lie down though, with Richarlison turning in from a corner to set up a nervy finish.

Thankfully though, Wolves were just about able to see the game out. And it was that man Matheus Cunha – back after suspension – who ensured any hopes of a Spurs comeback were dashed.

One of the big things to look out for in this game was always going to be whether Cunha would play, and what kind of reception he’d get if he did.

The Brazilian did take to the field today, and there was an interesting reaction from the home crowd when he came on, before he marked his return with a goal.

Vitor Pereira made a big call in keeping Cunha on the bench for this game.

It was always going to be fascinating to see what the manager would do, given how well the team performed without him while he was suspended.

Pereira confirmed in his press conference that Cunha would not start against Tottenham.

Then on Saturday, Cunha angered Wolves fans by making a post on social media, suggesting he’s future lay elsewhere from the club.

That led some to wonder if he would even play at all against Spurs.

Wolves fans were left intrigued when Pereira snubbed Cunha in the first-half, opting to send on Pablo Sarabia in place of the injured Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

But Cunha did get on for Wolves in the end, replacing Rayan Ait-Nouri just before the 70th minute.

And the reception he got from the Molineux faithful was very positive.

There were barely, if any boos, for the player following his social media antics yesterday and the recent interview he conducted on international duty.

And then, of course, he scored Wolves’ fourth goal. And after putting the ball in the net, he immediately made a praying gesture with his hands, made a heart shape, and also pointed to the badge, as if to ask for forgiveness.

Good to see from Wolves fans and Cunha

What Cunha did on Saturday was questionable to say the least, and fairly unnecessary.

But it was important that there were no frustrations aimed at the player today at Molineux.

It’s never good for things to turn toxic, and ultimately, Cunha will prove to be a huge reason why Wolves stay in the Premier League.

He’s a flawed genius, and seemingly plenty of fans at Molineux remembered that today.

And of course he got on the scoresheet, and the player’s celebration was actually very welcome. There appeared to be genuine humility with it, which was good to see.
