Virgil van Dijk shares what he's noticed about Wolves after fourth meeting this season

Virgil van Dijk has branded Wolves ‘tough’, after playing them for the fourth time this season.

The Liverpool defender spoke after last night’s 2-0 win for the Reds at Anfield.

Wolves put in a really poor performance on Merseyside, and barely threatened their opponents.

Raul Jimenez was starved of service all night, and there were very few good individual performances from Wolves players.

Julen Lopetegui went with Matheus Nunes on the left again, with Ruben Neves, Mario Lemina and Joao Moutinho in the middle. It just didn’t work.

In the second-half, Liverpool made the breakthrough with van Dijk scoring from a Diogo Jota cross.

Mo Salah then doubled their lead, making sure of the points.

As soon as Liverpool got their first goal, it was never going to be likely that Wolves would get anything from the game. It was that kind of night.

While it was a poor performance from Wolves, Liverpool goalscorer van Dijk did compliment the club following the fourth meeting.

The Dutchman suggested that Wolves are an organised outfit who are difficult to breach.

He said (Liverpool official): “Of course [we had to be patient]. I think we see the games we played against them this season, they have been quite tough and today it wasn’t any different so we had to be patient and wait for the moment.”

Wolves need to become more than ‘tough’ to break down, as Virgil van Dijk drops verdict

The suggestion here from van Dijk is that Wolves are tough to break down.

That has been generally true since Lopetegui came in, and that’s a good thing.

But Wolves obviously need to be much more than just that.

Quite simply, the manager needs to find a way of getting the goals to flow.

There shouldn’t be any issues given the quality of the attacking players but for whatever reason, nobody produces in the final third. And that has got to change.
