Two winners and three losers as Wolves continue winless streak in 2-1 loss to Liverpool

Wolves slumped to yet another defeat as Liverpool’s two quick-fire first-half goals seemed to be enough to secure the three points.

Santiago Bueno’s goal gave hope, but in the end, it would only be a consolation goal in Wolves’ 2-1 defeat to the Merseyside club.

While the loss is disappointing, and fans may be becoming numb to these defeats, the second-half performance did show some fight and desire.

The Old Gold were perhaps the better side after the break, and with that promising second 45, there are some winners, but of course, there are losers as well.

Winners

Mateus Mane

Mateus Mane was handed his first start of the Premier League season, and the 18-year-old talent certainly showed a lot of promise.

He was one of the few Wolves players who looked to take the game head-on, showing immense bravery and courage that a lot of his senior teammates seemed to lack.

The prospect of playing world-class defenders like Virgil van Dijk and attempting to beat a goalkeeper like Alisson did not faze him one bit.

Mane had more shots than any other Wolves player on the pitch with four, and with some more experience, and confidence, on another day at least one of those attempts would have went in.

Mateus Mane’s performance even had Liverpool fans raving about him, which shows how much of a talent Wolves have.

Tolu Arokodare

Tolu Arokodare has been unfortunate not to play more games for Wolves, as right now, his style of play seems to suit the Old Gold a lot more than Jorgen Strand Larsen.

The Nigerian had some good hold-up play that allowed the likes of Mateus Mane to continuously race through and attempt to make things happen.

And then his connection with Andre’s corner resulted in a goal for the Wanderers.

Tolu simply has to start moving forward, but with a game coming up again on Tuesday, it would not be a surprise to see Edwards rotate the squad again.

Additionally, what the Nigerian said after the game bodes well for Wolves.

Losers

Rob Edwards

No matter what Rob Edwards does, he simply cannot seem to get his Wolves players to fire in the final third.

He is clearly a great motivator, as the second-half display against Liverpool was yet another resilient showing from the Old Gold, and it was not the first time Wolves have come out the gates looking better.

With more quality, he could perhaps have had improved results, but he now joins Mick McCarthy in the unwanted history books.

The pair are the only managers to lose seven successive games after joining a new side.

Jorgen Strand Larsen

The Norwegian did not really have any impact after coming on, and in the 28 minutes plus added time he was on the pitch, he touched the ball just four times.

In comparison, Jhon Arias, who came on in the 79th minute, had fourteen touches.

There is some sympathy for Jorgen Strand Larsen in terms of service, but he also needs to start getting himself into the right positions to elicit more of the ball.

Instead, it seems like he is waiting up top for a moment of magic from his teammates, and that has been a rare instance this season.

With Tolu Arokodare performing well, there is a danger of him losing his place, and it might be time for that to happen now.

Hugo Bueno

Hugo Bueno has been absent for the last few weeks due to a minor injury, but his return did not go as expected.

The lightning-quick Jeremie Frimpong seemed to repeatedly have his number, knocking it past him quite a few times.

The first goal for Liverpool came from Bueno allowing the fullback space to run into, and it was no surprise to see him as one of the first subs on the day.

David Moller Wolfe, who has started the six previous games, will not have any worries about his spot in the starting XI, at least for the foreseeable future.
