Three genuine reasons for optimism as Wolves face Man United at Old Trafford

Wolves take to the pitch for the final time in 2025 tonight, as they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Rob Edwards is looking to close out the calendar year in the right way, and to stop this horrendous run that Wolves are currently on.

It’s 11 straight defeats for Wolves, and for the moment the Old Gold are cut adrift at the bottom of the table. And, truth be told, it’s hard to see the club closing the gap to safety, which is currently 16 points.

Would you be happy with this starting XI, Wolves fans?

But it’s United up next for Wolves, and perhaps it’s not out of the question Wolves could spring a surprise.

Here are a few genuine reasons for optimism ahead of tonight’s game.

Wolves away from Molineux pressure cooker

Theo Walcott recently suggested relegation-threatened teams like Wolves don’t like home games, because the pressure is so intense.

And to describe the atmosphere at Molineux this season as ‘intense’ is perhaps an understatement.

Fans have been incredibly angry with the way things have panned out, with Fosun now taking both barrels.

The players have also drawn criticism, although most of the negativity is directed towards the owners.

Tonight Wolves are away from the pressure cooker that is Molineux and the players may well do better as a result.

Rob Edwards did actually admit recently that the players have been affected by the Molineux tensions, so hopefully they can play with a bit more freedom tonight.

No Bruno Fernandes

United will not be able to call on their captain Bruno Fernandes tonight as he is injured.

The game comes too soon for the Portuguese midfielder, which is a blow for the Red Devils, but his absence hands Wanderers an improved chance.

In the reverse fixture, Fernandes scored twice and also assisted.

There is no doubt he’s United’s best and most influential player, so Wolves have to try and make his absence count.

Last game of 2025

The year of 2025 started with so much optimism, with Vitor Pereira looking like a manager with genuine potential to bring back the special times to Wolves.

But going into this final game of the calendar year, it’s safe to say that the mood around Wolves is the lowest it’s been for quite some time.

But one can hope that the players and Edwards are looking at this game as a chance to send a bit of a message to the fans. That they won’t stop fighting.

Hopefully for this last game, there is a fierce determination to finish the calendar year in the right way and to set the tone for 2026.

Somehow, it does feel – given the players are yet to win in the league this season – that a huge shift will be put in tonight to bring this winless run to an end.
