Rodrigo Gomes heralded Wolves’ defensive shape, after Wolves recorded a brilliant win over Liverpool in the Premier League

Rodrigo Gomes, who was instrumental in the win, opened the scoring in the 78th minute with a brilliant finish holding off the much bigger Ibrahima Konate before flicking the ball past Alisson.

Despite Mohamed Salah’s equaliser five minutes later, Wolves’ determination shone through as Andre’s deflected shot in stoppage time sealed the win.

There were scenes of bedlam when Andre scored, and smiles all round as the final whistle went to confirm back-to-back wins for Wolves.

After the game, goalscorer Rodrigo spoke about how Wolves were able to pull off the shock.

For a team languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, back-to-back wins will inject a much-needed dose of confidence.

Rob Edwards had emphasised the importance of work rate to achieve good results, and that was certainly on show last night.

For Gomes, Wolves’ defending really was the key to the 2-1 win, noting how compact the team was.

He said (via Wolves official): “We defended very well. We were very compact and didn’t allow a lot of chances to Liverpool. Then we got our chances and we scored – I scored, Andre scored, and I’m very happy for him – his first goal, it’s unbelievable. We did an amazing game and achieved the win, which is the most important thing, and we need to enjoy it.

“Even when they scored, we kept compact and we showed our belief and scored the goal. It was an amazing moment with the fans. It was just unbelievable.”

A glimmer of hope

Wolves still face a daunting task to escape relegation, but back-to-back victories have provided a glimmer of hope.

They remain 11 points adrift of safety, but with the spirit displayed in these recent matches, anything seems possible. The upcoming fixtures will be crucial, and maintaining this level of performance could inspire a remarkable turnaround.

As Gomes put it: “We need to keep going, keep believing in ourselves, giving everything until the last minute and winning games.” With this attitude, Wolves may just have the fight left in them to defy the odds and pull off the greatest escape in Premier League history.

Wolves will pause their Premier League campaign now though, and gear up for another game against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

The Reds come back to Molineux, and there is clearly no reason why Wolves cannot stun the Reds again.
