Rob Edwards praised Wolves’ grit after coming through tough conditions in the FA Cup win over Grimsby.
Wolves showed resilience and determination to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup, overcoming challenging conditions at Blundell Park.
The Old Gold battled not just their League Two opponents but also the elements, with the weather playing a significant role.
Rob Edwards praised his side’s ability to adapt and grind out a result in what was anything but a typical football match. The match was something of a throwback to a different era of football, with Edwards describing it as ‘an aggressive game of headers and volleys in the end’.
The game was not easy on the eye, with Edwards admitting afterwards (via Wolves official): “It was never going to be a day for beautiful football.”
Adapting to the conditions

Edwards had stressed the importance of mentality in the lead-up to this match, drawing on past performances against the likes of Manchester United to instil belief and respect for the opposition.
“We talked a lot over the last few days about mentality,” he’d said.
The conditions will have been a new experience for many in the squad, particularly those unaccustomed to the lower leagues of English football. Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, however, relished the challenge, describing the day as ‘cold, wet, muddy and difficult’, yet one he enjoyed.
His enthusiasm for the conditions seemed to ultimately rub off on his teammates, as they rose to the occasion to deliver a 1-0 win.
Santiago Bueno shines during the slog
Santiago Bueno was the match-winner for Wolves, but he also provided a vital defensive contribution at the death.
Edwards was effusive in his praise for the Uruguayan, noting his quiet leadership and growing influence within the team. “It was a brilliant finish.
“He made a great run, a little darting run across the six yard box and he got on there and I was really pleased to see it fly in the top corner.
“He’s been playing really well. Santi is someone who is really growing on me. He goes about his business, he’s unassuming, very quiet, but a quiet leader. He’s been playing very well for us, and he’s helped us to two clean sheets in a row.

“He’s been good and he’s got the all-important goal today, and an amazing tackle right at the end as well. He’s just a good footballer and he showed up today. I really like him and it’s too early to speak about things like that [Bueno being with the squad next season] now, but I do really like Santi Bueno.
It has been a terrible season for Wolves, but Bueno has certainly had a decent campaign himself.
His showing was praised by Wolves fans on social media after the game, with many remarking that he can be pleased with his own personal efforts this term.
Wolves’ attention now turns back to the Premier League with Arsenal up next at Molineux, which will of course be a radically different game to Grimsby.
