Wolves were victorious in their first pre-season friendly against Como as one player stood out above the rest.
Gary O’Neil’s pre-season schedule with Wolves is underway as the Old Gold prepare for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.
The manager will be eager to properly assess his players ahead of next term, with 15 players spending last season out on loan.
On Monday evening, the squad played their first game of pre-season in a friendly against Cesc Fabregas’ Como side, seeing Wolves win 1-0 at their Marbella training camp.

Yerson Mosquera impressed for Wolves in pre-season friendly win against Como
The game was supposed to draw attention to Wolves’ new recruits, as Pedro Lima, Rodrigo Gomes and Jorgen Strand Larsen started the game however, it was an unfortunate narrative that emerged from the victory.
Hwang Hee-chan was reportedly on the receiving end of a racist remark from the opposition, seeing Daniel Podence receive a red card for retaliating in protection of his teammate.
Podence wasn’t the only player who spent last term on loan to feature in the fixture, with Wolves fans finally getting the chance to see Yerson Mosquera in action.
Reporting from the game was Express and Star journalist Nathan Judah, who had strong words to describe Mosquera’s first-half performance in Spain.
On X, Judah described the centre-back as a “Rolls-Royce”, being taken aback by the Colombian’s quality in the “early days” of his career under O’Neil.
Signed by Wolves in 2021, Mosquera has only made one senior appearance for the club, coming that year against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.
After an impressive loan spell at Villarreal last season, it looks as though the Old Gold could already have their heir to Max Kilman with the 23-year-old.
Mosquera return could be huge for Gary O’Neil
During the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, Spanish media hailed Mosquera as ‘tremendous’ for his efforts in yellow.
Villarreal made it clear that they wanted to sign the Wolves centre-back, who now looks poised to remain in the Premier League in what could be a significant plus for O’Neil.
After losing captain Kilman to West Ham, the manager has a decision to make in defence, with the Englishman needing to be replaced ahead of next season.
If the early signs are seeing the 23-year-old dubbed a “Rolls-Royce” then surely things can only get better for the defender as pre-season work ticks on.
The situation regarding Mosquera has fallen perfectly into place for the Midlands club, who now have a centre-back of true quality that can be integrated into the squad in place of Kilman.
