Premier League statement reveals why John Stones goal stood in Wolves vs Man City after VAR controversy

Wolves were cruelly denied a point at the death as Manchester City scored a late winner at Molineux.

Gary O’Neil’s heart was broken by John Stones as Wolves fell agonisingly short to Manchester City.

The Old Gold took the lead through Jorgen Strand Larsen in the first half before Josko Gvardiol and John Stones scored to give City three points.

Stones’ goal will earn the headlines as the on-field decision was to rule the goal out; however, VAR intervention saw the late winner stand.

Why John Stones’ goal vs Wolves was allowed to stand

In the dying embers, Stones gave City the win despite Wolves’ best efforts at Molineux.

The Englishman headed in from a late corner to give his side the lead, with controversy coming as a result of the match winner.

Bernardo Silva was seen to make contact with Jose Sa, standing in front of the Wolves ‘keeper as the ball was delivered into the box, which led the on-field decision to rule the goal out for offside.

Chris Kavanagh was advised to review the goal by Stuart Attwell on VAR, which then saw the goal given to break Wolves hearts.

Following the late drama, the Premier League released an explanation of the decision, which will certainly split opinion.

“Stones’ goal was disallowed on-field due to Bernardo Silva being in an offside position and in the goalkeeper’s line of vision.

“The VAR deemed Bernardo Silva wasn’t in the line of vision and had no impact on the goalkeeper and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned his original decision and a goal was awarded.”

PGMOL will have a lot to answer for from a Wolves point of view, as the Old Gold were punished once again by the involvement of VAR.

Wolves dug deep against Man City

It was a devastating goal to concede for many reasons, as Wolves were seconds away from earning their second point of the season.

After a hard-fought 90 minutes, the hosts’ hard work was undone by the intervention of VAR, who controversially awarded City’s winner despite the initial on-field call.

There will be a long inquest into why Stones’ goal stood and whether it was the correct decision, with the reality being that it leaves Wolves without a point and stuck to the bottom of the Premier League table.
