Premier League statement explains reason for lengthy VAR check after Wolves opener vs Tottenham

Wolves went ahead soon after kick-off as Rayan Ait-Nouri found the back of the net against Tottenham.

There was early elation in Wolves’ clash with Spurs at Molineux as the hosts took the lead after 85 seconds.

Ange Postecoglou was aware of Wolves’ quality before the match and is even more aware now, as Rayan Ait-Nouri scored a volley less than two minutes after kick-off.

Vitor Pereira’s side earned an early advantage over the Lilywhites however, those at Molineux were forced to wait to properly celebrate, as VAR intervened.

Premier League statement on Wolves VAR check after Rayan Ait-Nouri’s opener

After a burst of pace on the ball, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde got away from Pape Matar Sarr to win a free-kick in a tasty area.

Bellegarde took the kick he won, firing it goalwards to see Guglielmo Vicario punch the ball out as far as Ait-Nouri, who hit it on the volley to see the net rustle.

The restart was paused as Spurs players protested to referee Anthony Taylor, who has angered Wolves in the past.

VAR then intervened, looking for a possible offside at first, resulting in the goal eventually being cleared to stand.

Taylor awarded the goal however, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t an offside, as the Premier League then released a statement confirming an offside position.

“The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Munetsi in an offside position but deemed not to be impacting Vicario’s ability to play the ball.”

The Premier League Match Centre account took to X to release the statement, confirming that Marshall Munetsi was offside but played no part in the goal.

Ait-Nouri makes Premier League history for Wolves

Ait-Nouri’s goal was well taken as the Algerian netted his fourth of the Premier League season.

This one was special, however, as it marked a record-breaking strike in Wolves’ history in the Premier League.

After scoring only 85 seconds into the match, Ait-Nouri wrote himself into history by scoring Wolves’ fastest ever goal of the Premier League era.

The Old Gold pounced on Spurs’ early wobble to take the lead, giving Ait-Nouri history-making status at Molineux.
