Poor defensive display sees multiple 4/10s as Wolves are defeated at Arsenal

Gary O’Neil’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates despite Matheus Cunha’s late goal.

It was a terrible first-half performance from Wolves as they quickly went 2-0 down after 13 minutes.

Defensively, the visitors were all over the place and could have easily gone 5-0 behind before the break.

The absentees of Pedro Neto and Rayan Ait-Nouri were clearly evident in an attacking sense as well.

Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina were also unavailable after they both picked up yellow card suspensions in Monday night’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham.

Now, after O’Neil’s side have suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats for the first time since September, we rated the players for their performance against Arsenal.

Conceded twice in a short amount of time. However, there was little he could do about either. He made a good save just before coming off injured

RWB – Nelson Semedo – 5/10

Allowed Arsenal far too much time on the right flank with almost every big chance coming from down his side. Produced a good tackle upfield late on to help Cunha pull one back.

CB – Max Kilman – 4/10

It was a terrible showing by the captain. Arsenal could have had five before half-time mainly due to Wolves’ static defensive performance. His distribution throughout was also poor.

CB – Craig Dawson – 4/10

Done too easy by Saka for the opener. Alongside Kilman looked too static throughout the game making it easy for Arsenal to carve through their backline.

CB – Toti Gomes – 5/10

Looked shaky throughout the game and gave the ball away far too many times. Another game gone by where Wolves have failed to keep a clean sheet. With January just around the corner, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gay O’Neil dipped into the market to get a defender.

LWB – Hugo Bueno – 5/10

Faced with Bukaya Saka, Bueno had a tough challenge and struggled throughout. Saka had the beating of the youngster for most of the game. The opener directly came from his inability to ensure Saka didn’t cut inside.

CM – Jean-Ricner Bellegarde – 5/10

Tried to do too much at times which resulted in Wolves losing the ball. Didn’t get the visitors forward when in possession which just resulted in more Arsenal pressure.

CM – Tommy Doyle – 6/10

Tried to bring Wolves forward with a couple of good passes. However, this only really seemed in happen in the second period after a fairly poor first half.

CM – Boubacar Traore – 4/10

Ghosted for most of the game with his presence largely unnoticeable. The lack of a link between the defence and attack was one of Wolves’ main downfalls in the tie and Traore had to do better to ensure this didn’t happen.

ST – Matheus Cunha – 7/10

Looked exciting whenever he got the ball. However, this was rare and he was mainly feeding off scraps throughout the game. Had to drop into midfield at times in order to get the ball. A great finish as well late on to pull Wolves back into the game.

ST – Hwang Hee-Chan – 6/10

For the few moments Hwang was on the ball, he looked lively and wanted things to happen up top. He was certainly one of Wolves’ better performers.

Sub – Daniel Bentley – 6/10

Came on and didn’t do too much wrong. Wolves didn’t concede while he was on so that may give him some confidence.

Matt Doherty – 5/10

Offered a bit more in attack upon his introduction.

Pablo Sarabia – 5/10

Didn’t make much of an impact.

Sasa Kalajdzic- 6/10

Didn’t have time to make an impact.
