PGMOL break their silence after Bukayo Saka offside incident during Wolves vs Arsenal

Wolves can count themselves slightly unlucky at Arsenal after putting in one of their best performances of the season.

In typical Wolves fashion, they somehow managed to score three goals on the day and come out on the losing side, after two own goals from Sam Johnstone and Yerson Mosquera.

Many had written off the Old Gold before the game even started, so to see the performance from the players is certainly a step in the right direction. But it still comes down to switching off.

Despite defeat, there were plenty of positives to take away from that Wolves performance.

Tolu Arokodare bagged his first goal for Wolves, but even he raised the point after the match that they need to stop conceding so late on as a team.

In the position Wolves find themselves in, you simply cannot afford to make mistakes, and every opportunity that presents itself needs to be taken.

Mark Chapman shares what PGMOL told him about Bukayo Saka offside incident

Wolves have had their fair share of VAR controversies over the years, and there was another talking point during the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday night.

Arsenal’s first goal came directly from a corner that rebounded off Sam Johnstone and into the goal. But the circumstances in which the Gunners won the corner were rather controversial.

A ball was fed in behind Toti Gomes in an attempt to find Bukayo Saka, which forced the Wolves defender to deal with the threat by heading it out for a corner.

But, it was later proven that Saka was in an offside position when the ball was played, which sparked major uproar amongst Wolves fans.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Mark Chapman shared what PGMOL had told the show about the incident at the Emirates.

“So here’s the reason why, and we checked with PGMOL here, as to why he couldn’t be given offside. Bukayo Saka didn’t do any of these four things.

“He didn’t affect his opponent’s line of vision. He didn’t challenge the opponent for the ball. He didn’t attempt to play the ball; he just dropped off, didn’t he? And he didn’t do anything to impact the ability of the opponent to play the ball.”

Was the right decision made by the officials?

Well, the fact that Toti Gomes had to decide to head the ball out for a corner shows that Bukayo Saka was directly influencing the play.

Had Saka retracted his run, then the Wolves player would have been able to shepherd the ball out of play or take a touch.

It is decisions like these that really hurt a club like Wolves fighting at the bottom, and the whole point of VAR was to eradicate things like this.

Instead, it feels like the rules need changing to allow for these types of situations to be addressed, as he’s quite clearly the only target of the ball over the top.
