Wolves are back in action in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon against Sheffield United, a fixture that pundit Paul Merson admits could present a ‘problem’ for Gary O’Neil’s side.
After the heroics that Wolves showcased against Spurs last weekend in the Premier League, Gary O’Neil’s side will hope to replicate the result at Molineux on Sunday as Sheffield United come to town.
Despite recording emphatic back-to-back away wins in the capital, the Old Gold’s form at home has suffered, losing their previous two in front of their fans.
With Chris Wilder’s bottom-of-the-table squad next to visit Molineux, the hosts could have a good opportunity to initiate some form at home, although pundit Paul Merson has suggested that the game won’t be as easy as it seems on paper.
What Paul Merson has predicted ahead of Wolves vs Sheffield United
In his column with Sportskeeda, Merson was full of praise for Wolves’ recent results against Chelsea and Spurs, but was quick to highlight one key problem with O’Neil’s squad.
“Wolves have been amazing in recent weeks, but they’re another team that tends to be very inconsistent. They’ve defeated both Tottenham and Chelsea, but they suffered a defeat against Brentford.”
“The problem with Wolves is that when the pressure’s on and they need to win, they don’t.”
Merson predicted the hosts to win 3-1 against the Blades, but not without overcoming their inconsistent form in lesser games.
While the Old Gold have secured magnificent wins against the likes of Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester City this season, they have also fallen short to Sheffield United, Crystal Palace and Brentford, teams that fall below them in the table.

Now that survival isn’t a problem, O’Neil could find his squad in a battle for a potential high of a European finish, with only three points currently separating 11th and 7th place in the table.
What a win against Sheffield United could mean for Wolves’ season
The upcoming games in Wolves’ fixture list could provide the Midlands club the opportunity to climb the table, something that Merson highlighted could be done this weekend.
“Wolves could go above Newcastle in the Premier League standings if they win this game and other results go their way. If Wolves are at the top of their game this weekend, they should be able to defeat Sheffield, but that’s easier said than done.”
With Newcastle United facing an away trip to title-challenging Arsenal, a victory over Sheffield United would see the Old Gold leapfrog the Geordies if the Gunners can secure a win over Eddie Howe’s side.
Everything seems to be coming together for O’Neil’s squad, with the ability to build some form being one of the few missing pieces of the Englishman’s 2023/24 puzzle.
