Mike Dean now slams VAR decision made during Wolves v Luton

VAR has once again found itself making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The latest shambolic mistake saw a penalty given for a handball despite the rules of the game clearly stating otherwise.

The ball first hit Joao Gomes on the knee before hitting his hand afterward which categorically shouldn’t have been given.

But nevertheless the penalty was given and resulted in Carlton Morris converting to give Luton a draw, their first point of the season.

The draw will be disappointing for Wolves who probably expected to be able to grab three points today, which they seem to have been robbed of despite a terrible performance anyway which has fans calling for Gary O’Neil to depart.

Mike Dean on VAR decision

Mike Dean is the latest pundit to criticise the decision, joining Gary Lineker as he spoke during Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday.

Following the penalty being given, Mike Dean was the studios referee expert on VAR matters so was asked his view.

Speaking, he admitted “if I knew I would tell you, I have no idea”, as to why Luton Town had been awarded a penalty against Wolves which is quite telling on how bad a decision it was.

The decision is one which will likely see an apology issued to Wolves later in the week but surely it is better to avoid making the bad calls altogether.

Precarious position for Gary O’Neil

The performance against Luton was by far Wolves’ worst of the season, but regardless VAR stole two points from Wolves.

This has left Gary O’Neil now in a very uncertain position with just four points from six games, he finds himself under scrutiny by fans.

However much of his troubles have came thanks to VAR, as without wrongful decisions he would see his side on seven points.

But ultimately, fans are unimpressed by his game management, but with some extra points it is hard to imagine fans wouldn’t be happy with him.

Manchester City and Aston Villa being the next two games makes surviving in the role a difficult task for O’Neil now.
