Micah Richards pinpoints one factor that makes Wolves ‘struggle’ after Newcastle United defeat

Pundit Micah Richards thinks he has spotted where Wolves are going wrong following the Old Gold’s defeat to Newcastle.

It was a difficult result to take for Wolves at Molineux, as the hosts looked impressive throughout the 90 minutes against the Magpies.

Gary O’Neil’s side led the game from the 36th minute to the 75th, as Mario Lemina made Molineux erupt after scoring the opener.

It was then a case of the Old Gold conceding two outstanding efforts from Newcastle’s Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes, seeing the game turned on its head in the space of five minutes.

Micah Richards says Wolves do too much under Gary O’Neil

There were very few negatives for Wolves to assess from the defeat, making the result an even harder pill to swallow.

The hosts were in desperate need of a win, with only one point on the board so far and the fixtures not set to get any easier.

Speaking in reaction to the defeat, pundit Micah Richards pinpointed one thing that Wolves are doing wrong under O’Neil.

Discussing the defeat with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards suggested that Wolves are overdoing it at times on the pitch.

“I feel at times when Gary O’Neil came to Wolves, we could see a plan, an identity, he tries to play through the lines.

“Sometimes I feel with Wolves they overdo it at times, I feel as though they always want to play really good football.”

The former Manchester City defender implied that Wolves need to tone things down in order to get results, with the attractive football on show at Molineux not winning everyone over.

Richards shares Wolves relegation verdict after Newcastle defeat

The defeat to Newcastle certainly showcased what Wolves have to offer, and the threat that O’Neil’s side can produce when close to their best.

To lightly echo Richards’ opinion, the issue that the Old Gold have is not the quality of the squad, but the inability to get results, seeing good performances conclude with no reward.

Despite spotting what he thinks Wolves are doing wrong, Richards admitted that he believes O’Neil’s side will be safe from relegation this season.

“I think they may struggle because they try to play the right way, but in terms of quality, I think they’ll be alright [from relegation].”

Good performances need to start to be commemorated with points, as a host of difficult fixtures await Wolves, who still have just one point to show for their work in 2024/25.
