Matheus Cunha’s screamer against Bournemouth means Wolves star has done something no other Premier League player has this season

Matheus Cunha is having the best season of his career. The Wolves forward is by far and away the club’s most important player.

Cunha signed a new Wolves contract at the end of the January transfer window and remains a hugely influential figure for Vitor Pereira.

The South American is undroppable, and his form, which includes 15 goals, in all competitions, makes him one of the country’s most in-demand players. And his performance in the FA Cup against Bournemouth is only going to amplify those conversations.

Matheus Cunha scores wonder goal against Bournemouth

Cunha was predictably named in Wolves’ starting lineup to face Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old netted against the Cherries during the Old Gold’s 1-0 win in the Premier League last weekend, and he’s come back to the south coast to torment them again.

Trailing 1-0 after Sam Johnstone’s poor goalkeeping allowed Evanilson to score, Wolves needed a hero in the second half, and Cunha accepted.

The former Atletico Madrid man unleashed a rocket strike from over 30 yards out, leaving Kepa with absolutely no chance.

Cunha’s stunning 60-minute goal was his sixth from outside of the area of the season. He is the only player across the entire Premier League to net so many from range — at least two more than any other player.

Unfortunately, Cunha was shown a straight red card deep into extra time after clashing with Milos Kerkez. He was dismissed on the grounds of violent conduct after head-butting his Hungarian opponent. He will now miss Wolves’ next three matches.

Making the most of it

Cunha being a Wolves player next season is becoming less and less likely with each passing week.

It’s no surprise Cunha is wanted by at least six top clubs. He is simply too good.

Although he penned a new deal, it is believed to contain a £62.5 million release clause — a modest fee for a top side looking to sign a guaranteed goalscorer.

While fans don’t want to see the back of the number 10, he will inevitably move on to bigger and better challenges in the summer, but until then, let’s just make the most of seeing him playing in all gold while we still have the chance.
