Martin Keown claims VAR made a ‘controversial’ decision during Wolves vs Crystal Palace

Rob Edwards’ era at Wolves has officially kicked off with Crystal Palace coming to Molineux.

The Old Gold were looking to start life under the new head coach with a solid performance, and it was almost a disaster in the opening 15 minutes.

The away side started strongly, and Jean-Philippe Mateta raced through on goal early but scuffed his shot wide of the goal.

However, there was another huge moment in the opening stages of the match, and it could have seen the Old Gold concede a penalty.

Martin Keown on David Moller Wolfe’s foul on Ismaila Sarr

In the 12th minute, there was a big call for the officials to make at Molineux.

Wolves’ David Moller Wolfe’s tackle on Ismaila Sarr was undoubtedly a foul, but the challenge happened right on the edge of the area, and even after replays, it was not clear whether it was inside or outside the box.

In the end, the referees at Stockley Park settled on a free-kick, but it made Martin Keown think about an incident that only recently happened in the international break.

Martin Keown said on Final Score (via BBC Sport), “We saw a very similar situation in midweek when a penalty was given against Scotland. This one is deemed to have happened outside of the box, so that’s controversial.”

Wolves were perhaps lucky to get away with one here, but it is about time the Wanderers got a bit of luck from VAR.

It also did not take long for a decision to land Crystal Palace’s way, to the behest of Rob Edwards, when Jorgen Strand Larsen was deemed to have fouled Maxence Lacroix, and if a foul was not called, he was through on goal.

Anthony Taylor certainly had to make a lot of calls during this one, and Crystal Palace will feel they were on the harsher side of things.
