Jamie Redknapp wowed by Ruben Neves after stunning goal against Newcastle

Jamie Redknapp claimed Ruben Neves is not far off Kevin De Bruyne in terms of being a pure ball-striker, after the Wolves star scored a stunning goal against Newcastle United today.

The 25-year-old opened the scoring for Wanderers at Molineux, with the game finishing 1-1.

Neves was in fine fettle for the hosts, spraying the ball about beautifully from deep midfield positions and winning the ball back a number of times.

The star, wearing the captain’s armband once again, prompted scenes of jubilation in the first-half when he found the bottom corner from around 20 yards out.

He started the move off, spraying the ball out wide the Pedro Neto.

The winger cut in and moved the ball over to Goncalo Guedes, who then cut the ball back for Neves.

The former FC Porto star took one touch to set the ball, before unleashing a fizzing drive into the bottom corner, which gave Nick Pope absolutely no chance.

It was the kind of goal Wolves fans have seen several times over the past years from Neves, and his latest effort prompted big praise from Sky Sports pundit Redknapp at half-time.

He said: “It’s a beautiful strike of the ball.

“Kevin De Bruyne is the number one for me right now in terms of how purely he strikes it. This guy’s not too far off.

“Once that ball comes back into Neves, as simple as it seems, it’s the first touch. It has to be right. It’s a delicious strike. It’s venomous.”

A world-class goal from Ruben Neves against Newcastle

It was a sensational strike from Neves, who was superb throughout today. He deserved to be on the winning side.

It is looking very much like he won’t be going anywhere this summer, although speculation is bound to pick up again after this game.

But his first-half moment prompted big praise from Redknapp.

For him to say he’s not far off £55 million star De Bruyne in terms of ball-striking is a very big compliment.

Hopefully we will be seeing Neves enjoy a few more moments like that throughout 2022/23.
