Gary O’Neil reacts to ‘terrible’ VAR decision that cost Wolves in 2-1 loss to West Ham

Wolves were left feeling angry after a VAR decision cost them a point against West Ham United this afternoon.

Wolves hosted West Ham in the Premier League today as the Old Gold aimed to build on their point against Burnley in midweek.

Gary O’Neil‘s men started the match like a house on fire as the Molineux faithful were left in ‘awe’ by another sensational display from Rayan Ait-Nouri.

He scored the equaliser against Burnley in midweek and continued his blistering form by winning a penalty for his side with Spaniard Pablo Sarabia stepping up to convert.

Compared to their lethargic performance at Turf Moor, Wolves looked bang up for it against West Ham as they sensed a chance to move up to eighth.

However, the Hammers rallied in the second half as Lucas Paqueta slammed home a penalty and James Ward-Prowse scored directly from a corner, with the ball floating over Jose Sa.

O’Neil’s men thought they’d secure a point through Max Kilman in the ninth minute of stoppage time, but as soon as VAR intervened, everyone in the stadium knew what the outcome was going to be.

Gary O’Neil reacts to VAR decision that cost Wolves in West Ham loss

Since its first introduction in the Premier League, Wolves have had an awful experience with VAR.

Previously, the Wanderers have seen numerous decisions wrongly go against them, including not giving a penalty in the last minute against Manchester United in August and failure to overturn a penalty in a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in October.

VAR would cost the Old Gold more points this afternoon. Kilman’s powerful header in the 99th minute looked like a perfectly reasonable goal, but upon review, youngster Tawanda Chirewa was deemed to be blocking the goalkeeper.

It was a farcical reason to chalk off the goal as Lukasz Fabianski was never getting there in the first place.

Understandably, everyone was left fuming on the sidelines as yellow cards were handed out like hotcakes, with O’Neil lauding it as ‘terrible’.

To rule out a perfectly reasonable goal and cost Wolves a point that could mean so much in the final reckoning is nothing short of a disgrace. It says a lot when the opposition manager and goalkeeper even agree it was a bad decision…

David Moyes agrees with Gary O’Neil

Although David Moyes’ side have secured a crucial three points, how they’ve done so isn’t fair, with Moyes and goalkeeper Fabianski agreeing that it shouldn’t have stood.

Of course, they’re never going to argue against it live, but after the game, Moyes reportedly told O’Neil that it was a bad decision.

When the opposition manager disagrees with the referee and VAR, it says everything you need to know. Wolves have been let down by the officials once more, leaving supporters wondering how many more times this can carry on.
