Gary O’Neil provides encouraging injury update ahead of Brentford vs Wolves with first-teamer confirmed fit

Gary O’Neil has provided an injury update ahead of Brentford vs Wolves, as the Old Gold’s centre-back crisis improves.

Wolves face a crucial early game on Saturday. After only picking up one point from their first six games, the Old Gold sit bottom of the Premier League.

One of the biggest reasons for this has been the tough fixture list, however, on Saturday they face their first opponents outside of the top 10 this season.

While Brentford will no doubt be a tough test, it is a golden opportunity to finally pick up a win and end their awful form.

Thankfully, ahead of the tie, O’Neil was able to issue a positive injury update going into the Brentford tie

With Wolves low on centre-backs, it is crucial that Santiago Bueno stays fit for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, Bueno was forced off against Liverpool after picking up a knock

This news no doubt caused concern for the Molineux faithful as it is the one position the club cannot afford to lose another player in.

In his press conference, O’Neil was able to confirm that the Uruguayan is now ‘ok’ and should be available to face the Bees.

Expected return: Brentford (October 5)

After returning to the starting XI recently, Craig Dawson was absent against Liverpool after an illness had swarmed the Old Gold camp.

His loss was undoubtedly a big blow for O’Neil, with the Englishman arguably being the club’s best defender so far this season.

There was hope that Dawson would return for the upcoming clash, however, the Wolves manager did not seem overly optimistic.

He said: “Dawson has trained a bit this week, but not fully.”

Expected return: Man City (October 20)

Another centre-back on his way back to full fitness is Bastien Meupiyou. The French defender is seen as a big upcoming talent.

Meupiyou signed for Wolves in the summer but is yet to make his first senior appearance.

After recently picking up an injury that prevented him from making his debut in the Carabao Cup, O’Neil has now confirmed that he is almost back in training.

He added: “Bastien is still out but getting closer and hopefully will train with the group next week.”

Expected return: Man City (October 20)

Yerson Mosquera – injury latest

Mosquera was seen as a vital player for Wolves this campaign. After Max Kilman departed Wolves for Chelsea, the Colombian was seen as his replacement.

While the Old Gold has not had the best start to the new campaign, Mosquera was seen as a highlight.

Yet, his season came to an end in September after suffering an ACL injury in the defeat to Liverpool and he is not expected to play again this season.

Expected return: 2025/26 campaign

Another long-term absentee, Boubacar Traore has been out of action since Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Burnley in the Carabao Cup back in August.

The midfielder suffered a knee injury which required surgery. Unfortunately, he is now not expected to return until the festive period, striking another blow to O’Neil’s early season plans.

Expected return: Christmas 2024
