Gary O’Neil provides concerning Toti Gomes injury update as illness sweeps the Old Gold camp ahead of Wolves vs Liverpool

Gary O’Neil has provided an injury update ahead of Wolves vs Liverpool as concerns surrounding the team selection grow.

After an awful start to the Premier League season, the Old Gold has had little luck.

Yerson Mosquera is now confirmed to be out for the season after he suffered an ACL injury against Aston Villa.

With O’Neil’s side consistently conceding, and their last Premier League clean sheet coming in February, injuries at the back could be extremely costly.

Therefore, it may be vital that Toti Gomes, who has been out for the last two games, quickly returns to fitness.

Unfortunately, in the build-up to the Liverpool game, O’Neil was not optimistic about his chances.

Gomes has slowly become a vital player at Wolves. O’Neil opted to start the defender at centre-back at the start of the campaign, but he has also been used at left-back.

However, since the defeat to Newcastle, the Portuguese international has not been available due to a minor hamstring issue.

With Mosquera out, Wolves’ only two fit senior centre-backs are Craig Dawson and Santiago Bueno.

There was hope he could feature against Liverpool, but O’Neil has claimed that he is ‘not fully fit’.

He said: “We’ll test him again in the morning. He’s trained but he’s not fully fit. He’s getting closer. In an ideal world, we’ll probably leave him longer, but we’ll see.”

Expected return: Brentford (October 5)

On top of recent injuries, Wolves’ luck got worse this week as illness spread around the camp.

One such player who was confirmed to be struck down with illness was back-up ‘keeper Dan Bentley.

While O’Neil has confirmed that Bentley is now fine, he does believe that some players could struggle tomorrow.

He stated: “Bentley is fine now, but there’s quite a bit of illness with players that will need a check. There’s a virus going around and some players missed training today.”

Expected return: Liverpool (September 28)

Mosquera was seen as a vital player for Wolves this campaign. After Max Kilman departed Wolves for Chelsea, the Colombian was seen as his replacement.

While the Old Gold have not had the best start to the new campaign, Mosquera was seen as a highlight.

Yet, his season came to an end in September after suffering an ACL injury in the defeat to Liverpool and he is not expected to play again this season.

Expected return: 2025/26 campaign

Another long-term absentee, Boubacar Traore has been out of action since Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Burnley in the Carabao Cup back in August.

The midfielder suffered a knee injury which required surgery. Unfortunately, he is now not expected to return until the festive period, striking another blow to O’Neil’s early season plans.

Expected return: Christmas 2024
